In response to Les' comments about next year being our most dynamic offense during his tenure...

I am shocked that a man with pro football experience that runs a pro-style offense with a FB on 90% of his sets does not implement the tight-end into the offense more.

Most of the truly dynamic offenses in the NFL that run the true pro-style I have a solid pass catching tight end to pressure the middle of the field and to be that big target in the red zone. We rarely if ever involve our tight ends on a consistent basis.

Just my two cents...

A deep threat forces more zone coverage more than anything else. Its almost a luxury more than anything else. A pass-catching tight end can be huge on third down at extending possesions and converting more red-zone opportunities into touchdowns instead of those field goals we get so accustomed to seeing. It would be nice to see a D Byrd type running streak routes again though

With Travin Dural, Avery Johnson, and the incoming freshman we have a chance at getting for next year, as well as getting some more talent at the TE position, TE production could really increase.

That's probably why we're bringing in 3-4 tight ends this year. Not too many college teams have the caliber of TEs you're talking about.

To me if Odell/Landry/Shepard caught even half the deep passes that were thrown to them this year, were probably undefeated. I mean i wouldn't be surprised if we only had less than 5 of those deep bombs completed all season.
But I do agree, TE is such an ignored skill position at LSU it's not even funny. Especially considering how run heavy we are, having a reliable, tough TE is pretty huge.

EW Jim,

Most colleges don't have that type of tight end because most colleges don't run the NFL pro-style offense. We do. We should be able to involve a tight end into this offense more than we do...just saying.

It's more likely because the freak athletes that you see in the NFL are the top 1%.

the QB overthrew more deep balls than the WRs dropped.

There have been plenty of sets with two TE's or have one running a route. Mett has to decide to throw to the TE.

Edwards will be the receiving TE (after Jacobs path a la Honey Badger) and will have a break out year.

Utilizing the TEs more against defenses like Bama, Florida, etc., would definitely be a plus.

The missing link to our offense last year was Left Tackle. Once Faulk went down the line was never the same. They definately gelled and got much better but I don't think Met was ever as comfortable as when Faulk was in.

TE can't catch the ball if:

1. He doesn't get in the game. Dickson caught what? six passes in one game and then he doesn't play the next game.
2. Les plays the tight end that blocks the best and the pass is a secondary consideration way down the line.
3. Okay this is kind of simplistic but Mett has to actually throw them the ball when they are an option. He seems to prefer the long throw to the short one.

This year the TE was needed for blocking. Last few years we had a QB who couldn't throw to anyone but his first option which was WR.
Before that JLee could throw to middle of the field but usually to the other team.

You're telling me if we had Randle he still would have overthrown him? No way. Randle made a living on those in 2011
