Bama built a dynasty and tradition over time just like any other program. With many wins, championships and some mythical type coach, not with market share and media love.
There was no media love for Bama in the mid 60s. Media hate cost us a threepeat and the team Bryant called the best team he'd ever coached didn't win the NC.
EZ's post reminds me a little about an article some old timer coonass reporter wrote a few years ago. He said he'd watched Bama show up at TS sometime in the 70's and wondered why couldn't LSU have a first class operation like that also. The point is LSU is a first class operation now. Every team is going to have lean years, but I don't see LSU losing much steam in the near future.
About the Southern inferiority complex thingy, I used to be eaten up with it until I realized no one defines me. No one has that power over me. In baseball, if you have "rabbit ears" you hear all the negative things the other team says about you, and start to believe it might be true. Southerners have rabbit ears, but don't realize every group in the US bitches about all the other groups as well.
Accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative.

Dude game day locked saban in the trailer. Just like your program.

I've been a poster here for years and I've come here many times and spewed garbage on various boards for my personal entertainment. I'm sure we are all guilty of it. This time is different. This time, I'm being sincere. I'm doing this to try and help many of you out who seem to have trouble coming to grips with LSU and it's place in the College Football World.
Prepare yourself my fellow Rantards. This could be long, but I will try to keep it short.
"Know Your Place" is a motto I live by. Whether at work, at home, or out with friends, I ask myself this question before asserting my opinions/beliefs on anyone. With this in mind, let me help all of you with LSU's "place".
One thing I want everyone to keep in mind: THIS IS NOT A WHINING RANT. These facts are what they are. In my humble opinion, it just makes being a tiger fan, especially in the BCS era, that much more rewarding. I have accepted our place, I've embraced it, and I have to tell you: I FREAKIN' LOVE IT.
So, without further ado, here are two truths you need to learn and love....
1) LSU will never gain the respect of the media many feel they deserve.
Why? Baton Rouge. That's why. We are poor, podunk Southerners in a state in the union whose only claim to fame when it comes to jobs, education, quality of living is that "well, at least we aren't Mississippi". Sorry, this is the truth. Because of this, the media will never put us on the same level as the traditional powers. Our market is much too small. If your job is to sell papers, will you market your story to 500,000 readers, or millions? Yeah, we all love football, but we love money more.
Our media darling in the SEC is Bama. Bama has more "tradition" (this is loosely defined) and a larger faux fan base. Yes, much larger than LSU's.
This is why we didn't "win" the game of the century. This is why "LSU must beat UGA to earn a rematch with Bama". I could go on and on.
Outside of the SEC, we will never be USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma and Ohio State. I'm sure I'm missing one or two, but you get the point.
So, with this in mind, would you really want to be one of these teams? Do you really want Les Miles whining for a shot at a game/trophy that we didn't win, or have no right to? I don't. I want my team to earn it. With our "place", we have to do just that.
2) LSU's opponents never lose to LSU because LSU is better, they lose because of mistakes made by the opponent.
Why? Again, when you are not a traditional/entitled/media darling, you are constantly having to prove yourself.
Currently, LSU is on pace to have the best season in the history of the sport. (Notice I said SEASON, and NOT TEAM). We are blowing out ranked opponents left and right. Yet, every week, excuses are made for the blowout, and LSU is put on upset alert for the following game.
Contrast this with Oklahoma in 2003 and USC in 2005 as being labeled "the greatest teams of all time" before they ended up losing.
Why is this not happening for LSU? Well, it is easy. In order to distract everyone from this historical accomplishment, you must downplay the acheivement.
How to prevent it? Keep winning, and keep winning big. Wasn't it great to blow up Arkansas last week after being picked to lose by so many? Wasn't it great to win the most irrelevant "Game of the Century" after everyone picked us to lose? Isn't it funny how now this game never happened?
I think so.
Well, EZE, what can I do in order to get my head straight?
Here is a quick list of things I do:
1) QUIT WATCHING ESPN outside of game broadcasts. ESPN is there to make money, not support a podunk BR media market. I quit watching Gameday in 2003. You should too. ESPN's commentary is like the nightly news: I know what they will say before they say it. None of the BS people are whining about today regarding what ESPN is saying about LSU surprises me. I find it funny.
2) LEARN TO LAUGH at the entitled/media darling schools. NOTHING in the this world diminishes another person more than laughing at them. NOTHING. When Nick Saban or his players are on TV whining about their right to play in the title game despite their weak schedule and loss to LSU, I'm reminded of my 3yo son when he doesn't get his way. I literally laugh my arse off.
In 2003, when Pete Carroll whined about winning a title despite not playing in the title game, I laughed my arse off.
3) Enjoy the moment and keep yourself in a bubble. This is my last bit of advice: There is plenty of positive to focus on outside of the negative media. Just read LSU publications, player tweets, etc. Keep yourself in an LSU bubble. Watch the games on mute, or listen to the radio broadcast during the game. If I'm not at the game and am watching at home, my TV is muted. I'm not joking. I started this years ago.
I have more to add but don't have time at this moment. If anyone appreciates what I've stated so far, I'll take the time to share more.
If not, oh well. Geaux Tigers. Beat UGA and Beat BAMA.
Yes, I want Bama. I want to beat an entitled school. BAD.
ETA:
Thanks to guys like Just Me, Doc, YA, etc and other posters who gave this a thumbs up. I know you guys know where I'm coming from. We may have disagreements in other threads over trivial things, but we are all TIGER FANS in the end. It's not often I'm serious on here, but I really meant what I said in this post.
We are witnessing history my fellow Tiger fans. We may never see another team in our lifetimes have the season LSU is having in 2011. As tiger fans, this is easily the best team we may ever witness as well. (Again, I stress SEASON, and TEAM with two separate and distinct meanings).
ENJOY THIS! Don't let morons in the media distract you from this.
Are we supposed to waste our lives reading all of this?

Yup. The OP went over your head. Completely.
why cause you failed imparting how I should "know my place" as a tiger fan?
Any time someone says you should "know your place" it pisses me off, and I am not one to get angry often. I understand you are playing the devil's advocate with regard to media bias and opinion, but why should you not get pissed if you feel the respect that is earned is not given? You just laugh it off when an earned title is split or a team is perceived to be better despite the outcome on the field (BAMA)? Because of the structure of college football, perception holds a lot of power, and as long as you are laughing at the slights, then you may not see how it could potentially harm LSU. You stated, "just keep on winning." Well no shite. If LSU is winning the slights don't harm LSU, but as soon as the opportunity presents itself in the "know your place" scenario the media piles on and LSU may be harmed.
However,
I don't see as much bias as you do, but only reality on ESPN. I don't think ESPN really says anything that is out of line and disrespectful to LSU. I think your post is inaccurate in terms of media respect for LSU. I have heard and read many opinions on ESPN about one of the greatest seasons ever and how LSU deserves a shot at the title even with a loss to UGA. Of course LSU will not get the same coverage as one of the larger market teams, but LSU has gotten a lot of respect from other programs and the media. Your post... not over my head, but just inaccurate in your opinion of the national perspective of LSU and CFB in general.

I disagree, there are maybe 3-4 perpetual LSU haters out there, and you know who they are...
I've lived in several places across the US since the '01 season
The national and regional presses have showered LSU, the coaches and the players.
I have heard the following about LSU:
Cowherd: the greatest CFB program of the decade in '08...and this year alluded to us being the program of the century
Sports Animal this year: best run prgm in the SEC. Those players love les miles, anyone would play for him. "LSU is in uncharted waters

Not playing DA at all, and yes, I laugh. Whiners don't crack you up too? ESPN's shameless promotion of Bama today should have made everyone laugh.
I'm quite sure they picked us to lose again. I could be wrong...this time....but I doubt it. They pick us to lose almost every week during this tough schedule/stretch. They have yet to be right. Poor fellas.

Since 2003, when the "slight" became apparent to all LSU fans, I'd say we've done quite well since then.

Here is where your anger is causing you to miss the mark:
LSU isn't being harmed. The media is.
You don't think other college football fans across the country who tuned in to Gameday this morning didn't notice what they were doing?
Who looks worse there? LSU, the team who EARNED it this year by playing one of the toughest schedules in history, or the media/entitled darling who was pimped out, begging for something they didn't earn.
CFB fans realize now ESPN and the media are trying to also make a game they called "the game of the century" irrelevant. Bama's reward for losing that game will be a trip to the BCSNCG.
How pathetic is that?
Not to mention the blatant disrespect to schools like Ok State and VaTech who could also state a strong case. I promise you, ESPN did themselves no favors this morning, except in the eyes of entitled/media darling teams like Bama.
quote:
I don't see as much bias as you do, but only reality on ESPN.
Like I said in the OP that you got pissed off at and didn't comprehend: I DON'T WATCH ESPN OUTSIDE OF GAME BROADCASTS. I get my ESPN info here.

So, you just agree with me again, then disagreed.

FANS, IMO, respect LSU. I'd say, aside from the SEC fans who hate LSU as a rival, we are loved by CFB fans across the country, in general. Fans don't make money by causing controversy.

Again, no disrespect to you, but I don't listen to them, so I don't know.
This post was directed to the guys who start threads about the media bashing. There is one on here daily. Turn those people off, and put the purple and gold glasses on. I was just trying to provide them reasons why this happens.
I think if we win out, the media may discuss this. Even if they don't, I don't care. I have the stats in front of me. I know. Greatest season ever.

Stupid. And it sounds like your panties get twisted when you try to watch football on TV.
If commentators get to you this bad you should watch another sport, try figure skating.

So you think the media does gives LSU due respect or will at some point?
Media has been giving LSU more attention this year than they ever have before. They have to play devils advocate simply to keep interest from the fans of other schools. Most likely these decisions are made in production meetings, not in the minds of individual sports personalities. There is plenty of positive coverage, but most people are just negative at heart and can't overlook it to see the positive.

I know my place. 3:00 p.m. C.S.T. C.B.S. Past years don't matter. The past is the past. Live in the now and enjoy it. F... the nay sayers. If you can't convince them with your body of work you may as well be arguing with a tree stump. We know what we have , we know our potential for the future. We are in the driver seat and nothing else matters.

EZE, I get it, it was not over my head, and thanks for saying it. When you post something that long, there are going to be some NegaTigers who are going to Search and Disect for anything that they can contradict you on. I have been on this board for a long time. I choose when to post because some of the "newbies' have nothing better to do than search for a word that is spelled wrong or for anything they can "call you out" on. If someone really doesn't agree with you and offers up their opinion that is different, I respect that. As long as one understands the spirit in which you meant the post that is all that matters.

Also, you don't see Les on TV whining constantly for his team, a la Pete Carrol and soon to be Nick Saban. Les, when he had a chance to do some serious bidding in 2007 after the false reporting before and after the SEC Championship, never once opined on national TV a la Bob Stoops, Mark Richt, etc, that his team deserved to be in the BCSNCG.
Actually Les did. He famously said we were the only team that was undefeated during regulation. A term OSU and Bama are going to use this year in their defense.
