He didnt just some how lose all of his ability to throw a long ball over the offseason

that was the original point i was trying to make...what happened? is the playcalling or him being nervous as the starter or just some other factor??? I am not by any means saying he is a bad QB. It could be worse...he could be throwing pick 6's!!!

Nothing happened, you assume that because in our first two games of the season, that since we did not throw to many deep balls it automaticly meens our QB cant throw them or that our playcalling sucks

I am sure this has been covered 100 times, but i guess i missed it. anyone else on here concerned with the fact that JJ cant complete a pass over 15 or so yds...all the "long" plays from scrimage we've had so far have been the receivers making plays after the catch. I don't think we can beat good teams with out a deep down field threat? just wanted to get someone else's opinion...

The Vandy safety was playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage by the middle of the third quarter. They paid absoltuely no respect to the deep threat, which contributed to the run game's disappearance and why the short passes didn't work. EVERYONE was near the line.

Yeah, the people acting like it's not an issue are just wrong. It absolutely limits what we can do offensively. If you can't pass the ball down field even a little, it affects every other part of your offensive game. After only 2 games, it's certainly not the end of the world, but you'd be kind of silly to say it's not concerning.

Go back & look at the 2nd half pass he completed to BL in the bowl game that was called back--ball went 60+ yards in the air.

The announcers last night said he has a plenty strong arm.

I believe weather had everything to do with deep throws last night.

Teams are keeping 8 or 9 in the box. Either the coaching staff doesn't have confidence in Jefferson or Miles is trying to play Big 10 football. Either is pretty scary.

he doesn't have time. the OL looks pretty shabby in pass blocking.

Let's take a look at those 20 completions.

4 of the passes were for negative yards which you can't blame on J.J. He's just running the play called. He has 8.5 ypc when you take those away and that's not even counting the two passes he completed to the RB out of the backfield for a whopping 5 yards. The playcalling and field conditions really handcuffed him. He had two bad passes all night (the one to LaFell and the overthrow to Mitchell).

thats why they invented play action, especially with how stubborn we've been running the ball despite them stacking the box, those defenders would have bit real hard on it

Bottom line is we have the wide receivers, we have a capable qb, a descent young o-line BUT a coordinator with no faith in his players and is too afraid he'll turn the ball over.

Being devils advocate though, everyone is blaming the coaches and playcalling but maybe its Jefferson who isnt looking downfield and is afraid to throw deep? I think hes not comfortable in the pocket yet and settling for the short routes that he knows will be open rather than looking for the big play downfield.

Because the camera view normally doesnt allow you to see deep downfield until after the ball is thrown, its kind of hard to tell if there are people open deep. That being said, it did kind of look like the only routes he was comfortable throwing were the underneath routes.

Certainly the rain could have played a factor in that along with the tempo and situation of the game. It is much better to look for safe, underneath routes or in most cases even take a sack versus throwing it downfield with a lead and the defense playing a pretty good game.

Among other things, accuracy on the deep ball, if improved, is something Im very interested in seeing and could vastly improve all facets of our offense.

Or maybe Miles, Crowton, and Jefferson all know how badly the media and the "fanbase" crucified Jarrett Lee last year when he was inexperienced and took shots but made mistakes. By limiting those same type of costly mistakes, maybe Jordan won't have to consider transferring to a 2nd rate school like Texas AnM like the 2007 season's scapegoat.

Given time to develop his field and pocket awareness as well as improved oline play maybe he could be a great player for us in the near future, you know unless maybe this is all bullsh*t and they all know less than all of you

The offensive game plan for this past game was to throw short and run it most of the time. That was because of the weather situation. I assure you that part of the reason JJ was getting upset and arguing with the coaches was because he was trying to open things up and they've given him very strong limitations on what he's allowed to do. This is probably done to protect him.

Miles is playing it very, VERY safe these past two games. Look at his three big opportunities to go for a TD inside the 12 and all three times he takes the FGs.

Again, I think the coaches are scripting each drive or quarter with specific packages, substitutions, and so forth. I think that they've done this for a while. That is more why you will see a guy like Keiland get super hot in a first half, and be nowhere to be seen again until the middle of the 4th quarter. I think that is also why we kept throwing wide receiver screens instead of opening it up despite those plays consistently losing yardage.

I have a feeling that the coaches are trying to bring this offense along slowly, and its frustrating the players, especially Jefferson.

Don't worry, we are using 20 yard footballs right now while Jefferson gets comfortable. I hear he's going to start using the 30 yd footballs in practice this week and work his way up to 50 yard footballs by 10/3/09.
