No, because the penalty was enforced at the moment the interference occurred. That penalty is:

quote:

With less than two outs, the batter-runner, as well as the interfering runner, shall be declared out and no other runner(s) shall advance.

LSU didn't have first because the batter was out at that instant. The fielder could have launched the ball into the stands and the result would have been the same. This is why the "but they turned the double play" argument makes no sense.

The runner had already advanced, I doubt the call was made before the runner left for home.

Advancement is the awarding of a base, not the act of stepping off of the previous base.

Here's the bottom line. LSU let UF win a title last night. LSU backed into this CWS Championship because an umpire decided they were gonna make it. Those calls against Oregon State were embarrassing for LSU.

Hey, a fan of an irrelevant program has arrived!

Eta: remember when Alex Cora cried?

Dude I was rooting hard for LSU. I hate the Gaytas. Canes are not irrelevant by a long shot. You guys however have become stale.

Yeah, looked like a pretty stale program to me last night with 20k fans in the stands and a home game at the CWS championship. Stale program indeed.

Congrats to Florida, they played better, played cleaner, got the clutch hits, and deserved to win... but let's not kid ourselves: LSU is and probably always will be college baseball.

We've won a NC more recently than Miami has won its conference tournament.

Tell us more about "stale."

STALE recently. The baseball team was given a gift against Oregon State lets be honest. Miami will be back, don't you worry about that. We will see you in Jerry World in 15 months.

Let us know when you get "back" ... we're here and waiting, per usual.

Two things (i'll put them in separate posts because they are separate thoughts)

First I think the point people are making about "picking up the flag" is not "make the wrong call." I think the play was pretty obviously illegal according to the rulebook, but I believe what some are referring to is the spirit of "Letting the boys play."

In big games referees tend to not make ticky tac calls because it alters the game, which isn't the point. They usually try to call egregious penalties that are in themselves game altering.

Not disagreeing or agreeing with the severity of the penalty, but it is unarguable that the run scores regardless of what happened with the double play. That is the point they are making, and why some feel the call is unfair.

LSU couldn't win a game against an average UF team this week. It's a real shame honestly. I hate UF more than anyone. Damnit

Secondly, I think what is frustrating is that LSU wasn't getting any of the close calls all night. In fact a few of the calls were even outright terrible

- the clear bunt attempt that was called a ball during the 4 run inning that led to a walk
- one of our runners called out at second when he was safe earlier in the game. (the play that sparked the commentators to discuss NCAA needing replay)
- the lean into the pitch that wasn't called (but was called on us during the Oregon state game)
- as others have brought up the base runner that ran outside of the baseline to interfere with a double play

Finally to say that none of these or the Slaughter call altered the game is silly. If we score the tieing run I highly doubt Sully puts in his wednesday starter. He put him in to hold the lead. If we were tied or ahead he probably doesn't take that gamble, and we had that last pitcher's (Dyson?) number.

Either way the game is over so this is just hypothetical discussion, but I thought I'd weigh in.

Thanks for the distraction from a disappointing loss.., you actually just made me smile and feel a little better.

I understand the issue with the rule completely, but I do see why it's there.

What slaughter did could very easily become a strategy if the rule was not written the way it was. In that same scenario, where you're on first and see the batter hit what's almost assuredly a DP ball, why would you not take the shot at the 2B on the slide to interrupt the throw, or to provide a disincentive for the infielder to go home instead of looking in the direction where his legs are about to be taken out from under him.

There has to be a way to make people realize that doing what Slaughter did is not tolerated. Is ejection in the 8th inning even a real penalty?

Have you ever watched that Auburn game in the early 2000s? Pretty sure those refs had a good time out there

But at least they managed to score more runs against UF in one game than Miami mustered against UF in the entire season.
