Anybody remember that damn song they played on WFMF with Jim Nayseum?
"my man Swat..." and, "Rudy Mack.. Shoot that ball from the parking lot". I can't remember all the words, but it was Final 4 action, I'm pretty sure.
I'll say 1982. (?)
That team with Anthony Wilson and Redden at CENTER.. that was the best thing I've ever seen as they slugged it out to the Final 4.

That and beating Loyola Marymount at their own game, 148-141 in OT (I think), was awesome. Dale could have set up our halfcourt offense and beaten them to a pulp. But instead he said, "you think you can run? This isn't even our game style, but we've got boys that can FLY!"
Now, maybe I'm remembering wrong, but didn't we also beat UNLV (with Larry Johnson) that same season in a similar-type game?

My dad brought me to the LSU-Georgetown game when we were down from Boston visiting family. He decided to go last minute so we were way up high, but I remember LSU winning at the buzzer againsta loaded GU team.

So many great memories but the one that sticks out the most was watching Adoph Rupp try every defense known to man trying to stop Pistol Pete's one-man show. His 64 points would have been 78 using modern 3-point line. The Tigers lost but you couldn't tell by the look on Rupp's face.
Hell, just watching Pete's pre-game routine in the Cow-Palace was worth the price of admission.

Right you are I-59. Forgive my feeble old mind. It was a mere 64 against the Baron's boys that night. It's the Baron's scowl that is unforgettable.

To clarify the UNLV games:
'89 - LSU beat UNLV on a Blanton 3 pointer with about 6 seconds to go. Greg Anthony missed his 2nd of 2 FT's at the other end, to give us the chance to win. Even more amazing than Blanton's shot was Chris Jackson saving Wayne Simms's errant pass right after Anthony's miss. Wow. UNLV did not have LJ on that squad. Augmon and Anthony hurt us.
'90 - LSU beats eventual national champ UNLV on Super Bowl Sunday. I've listed this game earlier.
* We went to UNLV in Dec of '87 and got run off the court. The high point of that game was getting to see one of the biggest busts in school history - Hernand Montenegro. I have no idea what happened to him.
* We went back to Vegas in Dec of '91 and got run out of the Thomas and Mack Center again. JR Rider had a sick dunk or three.
The LSU-Vegas mini-rivalry was all about home court. Some great games.

I remember the year he played center at 6'6". But, every time a player got around him, they were looking at John Williams. They usually had second thoughts.

Enjoy some of this... SI Dec. 1980
"Cookie doesn't throw elbows."... "he just pivots funny." - Dale Brown
Enormous and powerful, not to mention quick and elusive, are valid descriptions of the LSU juggernaut. Oh yes. And bad. As Philadelphia will discover about the Tigers, they definitely bad. -SI

beat them in the Assembly Center in the 1980-1981 final four season, 87-73.
Lost the return game the next year in Las Vegas 83-79. Dale got some heat from some school administrators and some of the media for how much they spent on that Las Vegas trip. They stayed at some ritzy hotel and blew it out.
Dale was interviewed about it and in that crisp voice of his ,his response was "what were we supposed to do; stay at a Motel 6 and eat at Denny's ?"

Mine maybe a little insignificant compared to others, because it is a loss. I forget the year (like 95 maybe), but I was a student back from 1994-1999 and there was one year at the back end of Nolan Richardsons "40 minutes of Hell" days when they were pretty highly ranked, and LSU and Dale Brown were about to part ways with each other. We had just took the lead on the Hogs with about about 20 seconds left. Arky came down, missed a shot with only like 7 or 8 seconds left. LSU got the rebound, passed it down the court, but was stolen with about 3 seconds left. The dude turned around, dribbled once, pulled up from about 50 ft and drained a game winning three. That was the last time until Bradys boys defeated #1 Arizona like in 99 or 2000 that you could truly called the PMAC the "Deaf Dome". After that it seemed the air out of the old dome just deflated. But I tell ya, it was one hell of a rockin and rollin crowd that night and my throat was sore for two days!

Great article, Rollin. Nice find.
I was too young to remember that team, but I have pictures that are priceless...one with Swat Mitchell, Johnny Jones, and Greg Cook. Swat was holding me up (I was 3 or 4) and the others lookin on. It was at a preseason scrimmage somewhere. Jordy or John Tudor or some white guy is in the background, too.
