Did Mario Williams have to cover anybody?

Mario only played 6-7 games under Wade.

And yes, he was motioned into pass coverage on occasion.

But you can scheme your way out of that.

The Texans don't play a traditional 3-4 anyhow

Montgomery was a value pick at No. 95 overall, but he's not an explosive edge rusher and may be a schematic misfit.

This is what worries me. I love Sam, think he was a fantastic Tiger, and hate that the media blew up his interviews to make him look like some kind of slacker. Kid was ferocious, as another poster stated.

But I think he is doomed in the 3-4, especially at OLB. I know Wade is great, but this just feels all wrong.

I think he will be a complete misfit and possibly be out of the league in a year.

Hope not, but worried about how this will end for Sam.

This isn't your normal 2 gap 3-4 where the Dline is mostly trying to keep the Oline occupied so the LBs can make the plays. That's why you don't see or will never see the Texans with a prototypical 3-4 massive 6-3 330 LB nose tackle under Phillips.

Sam will do great imo

Sam will be ok if he gives the effort. We know he can because we've seen it. He will probably be asked to do the same things that Conner Barwin was doing at OLB. Barwin rarely dropped into coverage, was more pash rusher and run stopper.

never in a million years is Sam going to play 3-4 DE. he would get crushed.

Huh? Sam is without a doubt the strongest DE at the point of attack in this draft. He would be an absolute force in the running game as a 3-4 DE. Moving him to OLB is fvcking moronic IMO, but I hope it works for him.

If nothing else I give it some interest simply because of Wade's pedigree.

I don't see it. Not sure Big Sam has the speed to cover the sideline. He should be playing with his hand down because he is a disruptive force in the run game. Just my two cents since you asked.

This. I thought he'd be a perfect 2 gap run stopper at DE. I don't see any way he survives on his feet in space.

If Phillips said he can play LB he can play LB. When they drafted him I wondered about it because they play a lot of 3-4 and he is too small for a DE.
