I don’t rip on him for that. That was a tough play. Although Broussard isn’t lighting up from the batters box either

Obviously many of you have never played baseball or at least caught behind the plate because it wears you out from catching, especially when you have a knee problem. Garza had a full 9 innings on Tuesday, would have caught 17 innings in tonight’s game, and then would have had to get up and catch a full game in the heat, and if we win would have to catch a full game on Friday, then possibly a full game on Saturday and Sunday. He would have been worn out and not productive at all. When you call on a player like Mathis to come out and play, then you are depending on him to play his best. It happens, it’s baseball, and there are so many things and decisions coaches have to make in game time situations. It seems like an easy call for you and us as fans to say so and so should have kept playing whenever you’re sitting on your couch.

Thank you. The only dude in here with some common sense. You don’t catch 12+ innings and just pop up the next day like nothing happened, even with healthy knees. It was the most sensible time to get him out of the game and keep him somewhat fresh.

I agree, but lots of people bagging on Mathis about missing the curves. Just reminding everyone there was another play that factored into the loss

Keep him somewhat fresh for what???? Beating Miss St and getting rest to do well in the rest of the tourney was the only way we were going to host a regional. Beating auburn won't move the needle at all in terms of hosting, and there's no one to throw the friday game if by some miracle we recover in time to win tomorrow

True. But Garza handled Beck & Hess tonight. Both guys had way more movement on their pitches than Hilliard and Garza kept them in front. That’s no knock on Hilliard, kid pitched a gem. Just shows how big the gap is between Garza and Mathis

Isn't there anyone else with catching experience? I get Garza can't get run into the ground, but Mathis is just a liability.

Not like any of our catchers throw runners out anyway.

Doesn’t matter. Broussard makes the play at second and we’re not even talking about this. Maybe if Smith comes up clutch we’re not talking about this. You can’t pinpoint one decision and say that’s what cost us the game. That’s totally unfair to do. Baseball is a team effort and there are so many factors than putting Mathis in the game that cost this game for us.

How many innings in a row have you caught before? And despite losing one of our best hitters and defensive catcher the game could have ended on a ground ball to 2nd.

There’s no way to know how the rest of the game would play out. We got the run we needed after Garza was out of the game. State was able to manufacture a run and tie it up. We had our chances late. It’s easy to point to shite like this in hindsight, but in the moment it was the right call.

It wasn't the right call because of why he subbed him. Bianco at 1st with one out with Reid and Broussard up? And even if a run somehow scores State still has the bottom of an inning? Garza gives you a much better chance to win this game, which was the most important game of the season.

We choked the game away before Mathis passed balls. You remember that right?

Your argument is from a fans point of view. Not a coach or players. It was the right time. You got Garza one more at bat and subbed him with a little more speed once he got on base knowing you needed to get him out of the game. Dude was a workhorse behind the dish for 12 or how ever many innings he caught. If you win the game, you want to have ur guy going forward.

And the thing is, one of Garza’s knees isn’t even 100%. It was just a few weeks ago that he was healthy enough to be able to go behind the plate and catch. Can’t ruin a kid like that. I don’t blame Mainieri at all for changing catchers, especially whenever you’re in a tournament, and you have no idea how many more games you’d have to play, whenever it is 90+ degrees in the summertime in Alabama.

Ur right. Tigerfan88 doesn’t get it, and that’s ok. The only questionable call Paul made tonight was pitching to Mangum with one out and a man on third in the 9th I think. It worked out for him. Go figure.

Even if Broussard fields the ball cleanly, Mangum is safe and the run scores.

That move cost us a regional

If we are honest, a reasonable complaint about the move was losing Garza's bat.

I don't think anyone expected Mathis to defensively be so bad.

In other words, you are using hindsight to make a point.

How has noone mentioned how Mathis saved us on the ball thrown past first base with 0 outs. He definitely messed up at the end but im not sure Garza has the arm to get that out which gave us the chance to score the next inning
