This may be a dumb question and one that has been answered on here before but what is the difference between the two? Just trying to understand all the metric BS that seems to be such a big deal in ranking teams.

SOS: Strength of schedule played, from perspective of an average FBS team.

SOR: Strength of record - Reflects chance that an average Top 25 team would have team's record or better, given the schedule

SOR accounts for who your opponents have faced/beat as well I believe.

I thought SOS looked at your entire schedule, and remained the same throughout the season, and the SOR was based off of the schedule played so far.

Strength of schedule is simply the strength of the teams on your schedule. Strength of Record takes into account what you accomplished against that schedule.

An 0-12 team can have a better strength of schedule than a 12-0 team but the 12-0 team obviously has a higher strength of record.

I didn't just make that up off of what I think. That's copy and pasted.

SOR is basically “what skins do you have on the wall?” A team can have a great record but a shitty schedule, like SMU, or a great schedule and a shitty record, like South Carolina. SOR would help combine those components to help you compare the teams’ resumes.

Texas A&M will have an incredible SOS this year because that just measures the quality of opponents; they will not have as good of a SOR, which factors in how they actually fared against that schedule.

A&M will have played 3 number 1 teams by the end of the season if I’m not mistaken.

Strength of Schedule is the relative strength of the teams you are going to play during the course of any given season.

Strength of Record is the relative strength of the teams you have already played and either won or lost.

I wasn't doubting you. I'm just saying that I didn't know that.

And by the end of the season, A&M will have lost to all three of them and also to a couple of teams who are not number ones.

So as you can see, they are getting their money's worth from their $7.5 million dollars a year coach.

Stenght of schedule is how tough are your opponents, doesn't consider you much other than the one on one games. So you beating your opponents actually decreases your strengh of schedule.

Strenght of Record is how well you have done vs that schedule and how it compares to how an avg top25 team would do against it.
