So much dumb in this thread. At least people are correcting it.

What? No... You have to leave the end zone and go back in for it to be a safety.

This is incorrect. Your own end zone is definitely "in play", otherwise, there wouldn't be safeties in football.

Then why isn't that when the offense in on the 1 yard line and throws a TD to the back of the end zone it isn't an 8 yard TD?

Obviously (or not so obvious) I was speaking terms of yards recorded. And if a kick or punt returner is tackled in his own endzone, it's a touchback, not a safety.

the NCAA recognizes 108 yds as the longest kick return and 108 yds for the longest punt return.

Do you have a link to this? I couldn't find anything. Notwithstanding your incomprehension of my post, if this is true, I am still wrong.

I can't believe only 5 players in the country are averaging >200 ypg but to have one >300pg

How are they still getting this stat wrong? Here, ESPN again wrongly states that OBJ is 2nd in the SEC

I read an article linked on here that said the NCAA, the SEC and apparently almost every school use the same computer program to calculate the stats, and that program has no way to handle those yards. They are updating the program to include "Miscellaneous" yards, which will include it, but it will take a while before the update is installed on all computers. The article said the SEC intends to continue reporting the stats without the 100 yards included until it gets the update, at which point it will start reporting the stats accurately.

Old stats. Bill Martin contacted the SEC and NCAA regarding its stat package that most schools use not having a place for OBJ's FG return. As a result they are changing the package and should have included by next week if not already...

I don't know how to post links. Sorry, I'm old and not that computer savvy.

I Googled 'What is the longest kickoff return in NCAA history' which produced a Wiki-Answer link. It stated: Titus Young for Boise State November 14th 2009 vs Idaho State. 108 yards.

I did the same for the punt return.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific when making my statement. I was trying to emphasize the point that the defending end zone is in play.

Let me be more specific... If a defending team member possessing a live ball in his own end zone is downed, it is a safety if his team is responsible for the ball entering the end zone (such as a snap or a pitch). Conversely, If a defending team member possessing a live ball in his own end zone is downed, it is a touchback if the opposing team is responsible for the ball entering the end zone (such as a kick).

Because a live ball become dead once it reaches or crosses the opponents goal line while in possession of an offensive player.

I'm not trying to be a smartass; I'm just trying to emphasize that the offensive team end zone or the kick receiving team end zone is in play.

Back to what started this argument, please Google 'What is the longest kickoff return in NCAA history?' You'll discover that the record belongs to Titus Young for Boise State. On November 14th 2009 vs Idaho State, he recorded a 108 yard kickoff return.
