Bitching about (dragging his name through the mud) a former LSU AD on an LSU blog that his family probably reads (or someone they know tells them), is 100% going to negatively affect the memory of their loved one.

Tough shite. Criticism goes part and parcel with a high-profile position.

Since its inception LSU Football has failed to win an SEC Championship in two decades. Joe gets a pass on the 1920s but the 1990s fall squarely on his shoulders.

You should really just let everyone think you're a fool for the Will Wade stance instead of doubling down with the Joe Dean dumbassery and removing all doubt.

Not only a coward....but a dumbarse as well.
from wikipedia......
"During his tenure, Dean oversaw arguably the greatest athletic era in school history. The LSU baseball team won five national championships (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000) while the men's and women's track teams accounted for 22 national championships combined, including a record 11-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championships by the women's team. At the time of his retirement, the 27 national championships under Dean's guidance were an SEC record.

The LSU football team won one SEC Championship (1988), two SEC Western Division Championships (1996, 1997) and four bowl victories (1995, 1996, 1997, 2000) in his 14 years. Among Dean's final major decisions at the helm of the athletic department was to hire Nick Saban as head football coach."

Yeah he didn’t hire any of the coaches who were winning in the 90’s except I guess Dinardo. Also giving him credit for Saban is hilarious considering reports from the time say not only did he have nothing to do with identifying and pursuing Saban but he tried to low ball him and Emmert had to overrule to save the deal and then immediately replaced him as AD.

"Reports at the time".......really?
Joe Dean deserves the credit/blame for everything under his leadership. Joe was a decent human being who loved LSU and answered the call to serve as AD when needed. Smearing his good name is a disgrace.

No need to disparage Joe Dean. Not only brought tiger basketball to the level of national contenders

Nope that was Dale Brown who was hired by Carl Maddox

Let me first say I hated his time at LSU, but he did take over in the middle of an oil crash, and his job was to get the AD in the black, and he did that, but I still wish he wasn't the AD.

LSU’s athletic department never finished in the red.
That was all BS ginned up to help get rid of Bob Broadhead by the pro Dale Brown cabal.

From Jan. 5, 1987 Issue:

STRING MUSIC OR BE FLAT

“Joe Dean, the ever-popular All-SEC player at LSU (1949-52), alternate Olympian, Converse shoe company vice-president and TV color announcer who has made "string music" a national catch phrase, is up for the athletic directorship at his alma mater. The school should bow down in thanks for such a candidate.

Baton Rouge's biggest problem is not the chaotic mess left by former AD and confessed malefactor Bob Brodhead or the cynical, demanding, party-loving fans or the Kingfisherian university politics or even the enigmatic wild-child basketball coach Dale Brown—"I can manage Dale," says Dean, who actually helped Brown get the job at LSU. The school's lack of morale and organization is due, in part, to chancellor James Wharton, as meddlesome a college administrator as any athletic department is likely to see.

But if anybody can do the job despite the interference of Wharton, it is Dean. No one is more knowledgeable, respected and decent in all of college athletics. Dean already has a majority of the 18 LSU athletic board members solidly behind him. Don't drag your tails, Tigers. Hurry up and make it unanimous.”

Broadhead hired Skip and the rest is history. Joe Dean did nothing for baseball, nothing.

Pat Henry won all those track titles, and I believe he was another Broadhead hire.

The 1988 championship by Mike Archer was another hire by someone other than Dean who was just getting the AD’s job when Archer was hired to take over a loaded team built by Bill Arnsparger another Broadhead hire. And the 96 and 97 west championships were co titles. We didn’t go to Atlanta.
And 4 bowl trips in 14 years is really terrible when you look at our football history.

Joe Dean was a known penny pincher, he hired cheap, and did very little with our programs to get us championships.

Pretty much checked out of LSU athletics during that period and have no clue if Joe Dean was good, bad or indifferent as AD. My time with Joe Dean and his family were through my parents (they attended and competed at LSU at the same time) and Lakeside Oaks basketball camp and I have nothing but fond memories as a youth. Met Pete and Press, Apple Sanders, Danny Hester and Fig Newton. Have read numerous accounts of Joe Dean and have no reason to dispute but as for me and my family - he and his will always be dear to us.

I went to Joe Dean's basketball camp back in JR High. The only coach I remember was Coach Kermit. I remember Joe coming to the dorms for room inspections and getting a "tour" (suicides and other punishments) if your room wasn't clean, bed made properly or trash in the trash can. Good times.

At least Joe Dean had enough sense to keep Pat Henry....can't say the same for Skip.

Except fund it, hire the assistants Skip wanted, made sure resources were in place to help Skip have a successful program.

I have just gone over my post history and do not see that word anywhere.

Skip worked hard to fund his program. Dean wouldn’t give him the extras. He started the Coaches Committee, ran promotions, improved concessions and made baseball profitable at LSU. Dean did nothing.

In football Dean hired cheap and that brought on the tremendous decline in our football program. He never pushed for the best, all he did was balance the budget while we became a second line program. It wasn’t until Emery cut the rug out from under him and negotiated Saban’s deal that we decided to compete for conference honors. In two seasons we became conference champs.

Balancing the budget at LSU is the easiest gig around.

Joe Dean was the worst. He was an arrogant arse, as well.

I only was in the presence of the guy once, but it left a lasting impression. It was at the Lady of the Lake, cardiology floor (or whatever...bunch of people recovering from heart surgery were on the floor) back in the 90s not long after I graduated college. Joe showed up and tried to visit a patient in the room next to my dad's. The family had told the nurses not an hour before that their dad needed rest and no visitors the rest of the night. When the nurses told Joe 'nope', he pulled a loud, long curse-ridden fit that included the words "do you know who I am?" My parents, who are huge basketball fans and thus were huge fans of JD and his 'string music' stuff, were truly appalled at his behavior. That night I learned 1) that my friends in the AD were right about him being a jerk, and 2) you don't fricking mess with nurses at OLOTL.
