They were pretty much equal in terms of college performance. Flynn had a slightly better arm. Mauck had slightly better legs.

Flynn has more of an upside for the pro game.

Mauck was the perfect game manager for what Nikki was trying to do. Matt is the better pro, but if you had to say if one was better than the other at LSU, I would lean to Mauck.

Don't really care. Neither were phenoms. Neither were blessed with superior athleticism. Neither were dominate QB's. But both were champions. Both were leaders. Maybe not the same way Peyton Manning was at UT, but they were both leaders in their own way.

Man, those numbers are eye opening. Prior to seeing them, I would have thought Flynn had much BETTER numbers than Mauck.

Don't know/care about who's better. Both were great college QB's.

PS...JJ's a much better kicker.

Mauck was a choke artist in big games in 2003. He racked up stats against scrub teams and had mediocre stats against SEC teams.

Someone post his SEC stats from 2003. They weren't that good.

Flynn played better in big games. Yes, he threw 3 picks against bama, but also 3 TD's.

And threw 4 TD's in the national championship game where as mauck threw ZERO and just about pissed it away.

Its a shame really...

Russell and RP had more natural talent than both of those guys. Yes they were too busy being knuckleheads (RP in college and JaMarcus in the NFL)

RP should have had a great career at LSU and been a 1st round pick. (He was McNabb esque in potential imo)

And Russell ruined LSU's chances at a title his last year with his games against Auburn and Florida. (Yes I know its not all his fault, yes Jimbo had some crappy play calling, yes there wasnt much of a running game earlier in the year...but with his talent...he has to score more than 3 points against Auburn...and cant turn the ball over like that against Florida...Best LSU team to never win it all imo)

Russell should be a top 10 QB in the league today!....If he gave a damn, stopped eating too many hamburgers....and oh yea...if he wasnt drafted by the Raiders...

Such a waste of talent. Damn shame.

As far as the question...

I thought Flynn was more talented. But Mauck was more accomplished. Flynn had so many catchable passes dropped that year...it really hurt his #s.

Also add in the RP factor. It must be tough having a talented QB steal reps from you. Flynn was a good soldier about it.

flynn split time with ryan P or his numbers might have been better, plus flynn was hurt towards the end of the season.

Who cares, they both produced better outcomes than the athletic multidimensional QBs that preceded them.

Edited to fix spelling---autocorrect strikes again.

Mauck's throw against UGA in '03 sticks with me more , but that is just me. I was just a kid then, and I was sitting right front of where Skylar caught the pass. Turned out to be the game that put LSU Football over the top.

gross misuse of the term "choke artist"...if you look at SEC games minus Miss State, and include the SECCG and BCSCG his stats were...

153-248 (62%)
15 TD's
12 Ints

He did have interception problems, the the offense still had some potency. Two of his worse games were Fl and Ole Miss, both of which included a bunch of penalties on the o-line. During those games his lowest comp % was 48 against uga the first time. Beyond that his low was 55% and high was 80%.

Green was wide open through, credit Mauck for recognizing the busted coverage and getting it to him.

Mauck had the better recievers and better D imo.
He also got stats padded with a whole bunch of WR screens that the SEC learned how to better defend by '07.

Yet the '07 team is #1 in Total and Scoring O.
Maybe he had to, but I think Flynn did more with Les.

Flynn was pretty much garbage against KY and was terrible in the first half against Ark.

Neither was a world-beater, both were obviously good enough.

Flynn's NCG performance is the only thing that makes me want to lean towards him.

Mauck was abysmal against ranked teams. Something like 4tds and 12 int. really neither was an outstanding qb, and JR was far Bette than both. People forget in 2006 we rode JR arm all year. We had Zero , I mean zero, running game until KWill emerged as a true freshman.
