Seems to me that some of the things they like about Paul is his building the programs at Air Force and Notre Dame
Paul was in his 40s when he did that. He’s a lot older now and program building has changed a lot since then and a lot since he retired. I don’t think Paul is ready to rebuild a program in the portal/NIL era nor do I think he has the energy for that type of grind at his age. Thus just seems like a bandaid hire to keep players from leaving and Tanner trying to buy himself some time with a hire that he can sell with a resume.
Honestly I have no idea, other than ego, why Paul even wants this. He’s done everything he can do at this level. He doesn’t really have anything to prove

I see that Mainieri has already hired the recent Director of Player Development at the Virginia Cavaliers, John Hendry, the son of former Chicago Cubs General Manager also named John Hendry and a long-time family friend of Paul Mainieri.
Paul loves him some bbq buddies.
I hear Micah Gibbs is over his ACL tear, perhaps Paul can hire him again as his hitting coach. Kramer Robertson to coach first base.

I wonder what Micah is up to these days?

Maybe he enjoys coaching?

I don't think Paul really wanted to retire in 2021. He wasn't necessarily forced out by LSU, but he knew that relationship had run its course and chose to go out on his own terms (unlike Les) and had convinced himself it was a good thing to retire.
But retirement can sometimes be incredibly unfulfilling for someone who likes their job and enjoys the routine of going to work. My father, now in his 70's, retired and doesn't have to work. Yet, he probably works longer hours now at a job he enjoys than he ever did at his career. It doesn't pay as much, but he doesn't need the money, nor does he care. His job gives him a purpose rather than sitting around the house.
Paul has been a baseball coach all of his life. If you are going to get back into the game for a few more years, there are worse places to do it than South Carolina. He walks into a program with support and the potential to compete for championship. One, where the immediate expectations aren't as crushing as they are in your 13th, 14th year at LSU where championships are the expectation and it had been over a decade since you won one.

I think he enjoys coaching and missed it and being on the field. I think it's that simple. He took time off, got his neck issue fixed up and spent time with family, but it wasn't enough for him right now.
