No, it was called the BCS National Championship. It was the national championship declared by the BCS and guaranteed through contractual arrangement with the Coaches’ Poll, but it had no effect on the AP national championship selection. Lacking official NCAA sanctioning it was still dependent upon public acceptance for its legitimacy. If you look at the national polls section of the NCAA Record Book, it describes the CFP as a playoff to determine THE national champions. It describes the BCS as a bowl game to select A national champion. Notice the difference in wording. The CFP is THE national championship as in the only champion. The BCS is A national championship as in one of potentially multiple champions.

It was that way from the beginning. Nobody changed course in 2003. The AP never agreed to crown the BCS champion. Scroll down to where Roy Kramer discusses 2003 in the linked interview. He acknowledges they always knew there was the possibility of the AP selecting a different champion and admitting the BCS failed in its goal to select a consensus #1 vs #2 matchup in 2003. Nowhere does he insist that the AP champion was irrelevant or illegitimate. The fact that they even discussed it at all points to the fact that isn’t the done deal you are trying to make it out to be. Clearly the AP selection of USC held weight and relevance. The article discusses how that forced changes in the BCS and helped lead to the CFP. If it was obsolete or meaningless it would not have had that impact.

The problem with that analogy is that the BCS is what is trying to make itself something that it is not in this case through self-declaration. There was no official NCAA sanctioned championship. As such, any selector declaring itself the one and only is pretending to be something it is not. It’s only as legitimate as public acceptance allows. The public accepted its champion, but also accepted the AP’s champion. Ultimately the public demanded a true playoff because it grew weary of the BCS pretending to be something it wasn’t.
