So what's the rule on D line shifts.... no penalty called on later shifts.

Is it called only if O lineman moves ?

I noticed that too.
1. Incredibly stupid rule
2. I would jump every time if I were an Olineman
3. We should stop doing it

I believe you can’t shout, clap, or do anything that would simulate a snap count. If it’s just the DL changing their assignments then it’s fine. Kelly got in the refs ear about that. If the DL isn’t allowed to shift before the snap then that’s asinine.

had to have been a player saying something or clapping when the penalty was called

They did not give us the penalty for shifting, they said it was for disconcerting signals. The ref clearly thought he heard someone in our front 7 yell something that sounded like Moss's cadence. Honestly, there is literally no way for any of us to know whether someone on the DL may have yelled something out to simulate the snap getting USC to jump, so there is no point of continuing this conversation.

The officials inferred LSU called out a signal to coordinate the shift like that. Kelly let them know they shifted off the offense’s signal. They didn’t call it on LSU again.
Too little, too late unfortunately. It was a big penalty.

Lost me here. Dline shifting is huge for the scheme and all defenses do it. We shouldn't stop doing something, because a ref got convinced to make a bad a call by an opposing qb.

Man when they came out at 2nd and 5 instead of 2nd and 15 I was like WTF. was watching without sound at the time
Between that and the "catch" that clearly hit the ground that they were never gonna overturn, that drive was killer

This. I'm convinced that they changed the call because they talked to the QB. Refs shouldn't be allowed to talk about a penalty with a player. If the ref didn't hear anything, how is that a penalty?

I mean let’s be real….we know what we’re doing by hard group shifting all at once.
It just sucks that it’s actually getting enforced

It’s gonna be a problem all year because it’s 100% judgement based and no two crews will see it the same

Which is not against the rules.
Clap or simulate the snap? Yea u can't do that (disconcerting signals)

Looked like Weeks yelled out to draw the penalty, the shift itself wasn’t the problem
Posted on 9/5/24 at 11:04 am to TheWalrus
Yes, you could see Weeks yelling something right before the d line shifted.
So it would appear to be the same rule as last year.
Back to the OP’s question, who knows lol- not sure what the commentators were referring to.

Almost every call is judgement based.

Did we not have the same call last year as well? Did we learn from it..

There's a change in the rules this year.
It says the defense cannot simulate snap movement As an attempt to draw a false start.
It's intentionally vague.

NONE OF YALL NO THE CLEAR MEANING OF THE RULE!
The reason it was called was because you can't clap or "shift" within one yard of the line of scrimmage !!!!
If you are beyond one yard ,you are allowed to do the quick shift motion without occurring a penalty.
Ya, Its a totally new stupid rule that is ridiculous

Correct. Two blatantly bad calls gave Bama, wait, sorry, USC, at TD they didn't deserve.
I hate when refs are allowed to rig games like that. Just takes the fun out of watching it. Despite the blatant frickery, LSU still should have won, but they have Brian Kelly.

Maybe we should focus on English more and football less?
