Logan was the biggest loss. They really won the lottery on his overachieving and his level of success and leaving early created the largest void. Also losing high profile lineman here and there over the years has caught up.

UGA would've beat LSU in the SECCG last year. Sorry to say.

Oh, I thought Miles was the head football coach. I didn't know his coordinators made calls that he couldn't override. I guess if he could, he'd tell them the Warecat, 54 yard FG attempt, and FG fake were bad ideas. Yeah, maybe he wasn't to blame.

Go to the national championship game two years ago.

Come within one first down and/or a defensive stop from making another national championship appearance last year.

But we have one rebuilding year after being absolutely decimated by the draft and we're mediocre.

You stupid fricks really do amaze me.
Welcome to Excuse University. How'd we do in that NC game? And LSU is the only team to lose players to the NFL. Oh wait - how'd we do in last year's prestigious bowl game.

Who did the jackass make OC?

You said he didn't make moves to improve our offense and you were wrong.

He hired Kragthorpe who we all thought was a great hire. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and couldn't fulfill his duties.

WTF else was Miles supposed to do in August except promote from within.

He kept Stud as the OC because we just went to the damn NC game. You don't fire your OC when you just made it to the NC game I don't care how bad our offense was that game.

After a year of allowing Stud to attempt to prove himself he went out and got the very best possible man for the job who has completely turned our offense around.

So don't fricking tell me that Les didn't do anything to attempt to fix the offensive problems.

I think bob stoops could do just as well in miles position

He's a very good recruiter but mediocre coach surrounded by fairly good staff at a university that recruits itself

i love that people forget that les got us there with two of the worst qbs in college football. there are maybe 3 or 4 coaches in cfb that could have got that team to the ncg or put together that defense.

Yeah, it only took 5 years and a last resort to get him there.

I've been watching LSU since the late 1970s, really paying attention since the 1980s. During that time, the school's been through peaks and valleys; however, only a few times were we "elite" or in that class.

However, for the most part, due to any number of factors (weak coaching (1970s, late 80s/90s/present, ineptitute in the AD (late 80s/early 90s), recruiting stumbles), LSU had been a "little better than average also-ran" in the SEC (and nationally).

In the 1980s, LSU flirted with the edge of becoming elite; however, Arnsparger left and the Archer hire derailed that.

In the 90s, Dinardo recognized the potential, put some things in motion that would help later, but he was not the guy to get it done.

That guy was here in the early 2000s and with a Chancellor and AD on board, made LSU elite. He left to pursue his dream (NFL) and LSU made a fateful decision, it hired Les Miles.

For a time Miles held the reins and maintained. Actually getting an NC six years ago with the help of a lot of those other guy's players. With the exception of the 2011 season, since the last of those players left, LSU has been mediocre at best - hearkening back to the mid/late 70s, and mid 90s, when 3-4 loss season and a mid/low tier bowl was the best we could hope for.

The problem is, Miles is still trying to "maintain.". It is his style. It's how he coaches. Little variance to gameplan, weak adjustments (if any). If LSU gets a lead - just hang on.

In the meantime, in addition to the fact that other guy has built a machine in Tuscaloosa (and, sadly, isn't going anywhere anytime soon), other teams (in and out of conference) have become, or are becoming elite. LSU is getting passed by, both in and out of conference.

Now, whether aTm will stay where it is after douchebag leaves remains to be seen; however, Ole Miss is good and getting better, and Auburn appears to be for real - and that's just the West.

It's not going to get any better with Miles as HC. LSU will continue to be undisiplined, will continue to make critical mistakes, will continue to underperform and will continue to lack the mental toughness necessary to soldier on and ALL of that is coaching. It was all laid bare on 1/9/12 and LSU has never recovered.

Since that date, that other guy has owned LSU. He has "made their asses quit" because he knows he can (he's done it before). Sadly, other coaches/programs know it to.

Being elite was fun while it lasted, but we are, in every sense of the word, back to being "average" at best as long as Miles is coach.

Very solid post. Not a thing in it can be refuted, sadly.

It is what it is.

Les Miles is world's greatest recruiter. He squanders that talent on a regular basis. Fact.

Nick Saban systematically uses a disciplined, plug-and-play coaching technique that allows new players to understand the system quickly and beat the snot out of opponents. Fact.
