However, since SEC play has started, he is averaging 14 ppg and 2 turnovers per game while nearly playing the whole game. He has only been under double digits in points one time since SEC play started. Today he had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 turnovers. Mays had 10 points and 3 turnovers as well. Watford was the MVP, but he had 5 turnovers. People are acting like Smart is averaging 10 turnovers per game. Although he is not Waters, LSU is 6-0 in the SEC and on an 8-game winning streak. Not bad.

Yep since midway brought December smart is playing much much better. Today was probably his worst game in a while but it was still not terrible.

People like to forget that Waters would make 2-3 incredible passes and then make a dumb turnover then leave a guy wide open for 3 trying to gamble for a steal.

He would get on a heater and make some crazy threes but would also take some really dumb ones down the stretch. Both our SEC losses last year he made some bad late game decisions that sealed the loss.

This is not to shite on Waters just trying to say he didn’t walk on it either.

Th problem is that there are no point guards on this team. There's no centers either. Everyone is a 2-4. They hustle though and they crash the boards and play pretty good defense. Can't do much about their deficiencies now.

Yes, he may have had “officially” 3 turnovers but how many poor decisions led to Texas comeback. The poor shooting. The bad passes to covered teammates vs opened ones. Not running time off clock. There are so many things you can see that he just isn’t smart with the basketball with a lead or a close game

Look, our whole team went on a cold spell shooting in the 2nd half. And yes, Smart does sometimes shoot too fast when we could get a better shot. But Texas also banked two threes in and started hitting some very difficult 2-pointers as well that they normally don't hit. Smart wasn't great today, but in the end he nailed the two free throws to secure the W and put up double-digit points to help LSU get the W.

Again, go back to last year when he saved our arse a few times.

And who's to say he won't do that again this year, again.

Javonte is similar to Jrue Holiday with respect to decision making when having to probe the paint and make judgment as to who to pass to and/or take a shot himself.

They are not "combo" gaurds. They are shooting guards who can handle the ball "above average." Also, due to their height, coaches feel it would be advantageous to put them at point and consider them "big PG's."

However, they do not naturally possess a PG's "mentality" nor do they "actually" possess the elite ball handling skills that is required of a NBA caliber PG. Due to that fact, its tougher for them to initiate the offense because an elite defender causes them to "protect" the ball by turning their back to them and/or looking down at the ball...

Further, once they penetrate the paint, they usually become paralyzed in deciding what to do bc they dont see the court as a true PG would, i.e. blindly knowing where their teammates should be having taken a mental snapshot and where they are likely to position themselves once they enter the paint. That's why u never see them make the unbelievable pass or behind the head pass for the diving teammate who dunks the ball bc they just dont see a play ahead...

Smart was seemingly good last year as the back up point bc he really was just dribbling up the court and then usually would call his own number... Anyone watching last year, who knows basketball, would have been concerned going into this year without a Waters replacement at point.

I was hoping for Javonte to develop this skill but the summer trip and the number of turnovers happening in those games, confirmed my thoughts.

It is what it is... Just gotta hope that Wade can further instill discipline into Smart when handling the ball. But, he will never be a point guard and thats ok.. Wade needed to recruit a pass-1st PG for this team. Im sure he tried, that suspension really hurt the possibility of this team being even better than it is now...

Offensively I see some similarities, but Jrue is one of the top 5 defensive players in the NBA. At least you can make an argument for keeping him on the court when the bad decisions start stacking up.

And no he's not a point guard, only Mascona for a brief time last year has ever argued that - at least that I've seen.

I agree, but Waters stayed a year longer than he was projected . Seems like Wade would have already addressed that by now

I’ll know when that dude posts he’s a retard.
Mays won the MSU game and has big points at the end of most games we own this year.

Mays needs to have the ball at the end. That’s the Tigers best option.
Smart is in a Sophomore slump/inconsistent It’s happens all the time with all players

Waters was never projected to be a one and done. He was supposed to be be a 3-4 year player.

There was no guarantee of that. Point guard should have been addressed. Has it???

He is def doing better . He don’t have Waters outside shot so teams aren’t scared of that 22 ft jumper that Waters could pull off every once in a while

We weren’t talking about guarantees. We were talking about projections.

He might have been able to bring in a veteran, grad transfer point guard had he not been suspended.
