It can mean different things to different players depending on their position, focus, and goals.

I do remember reading articles back in Gibbs' first few years in the minors where the Cubs Organization said things in the realm of Gibbs having a future in coaching. He was also viewed as a much smarter player than he was gifted as an athlete

What does that post have ANYTHING to do with Bianco and how he got here?

I'm sick and tired of these immature college geeks bashing Coach Paul Mainieri for everything he does while he wins and they sit in their mom's basement eating Cheetos

I don't remember those articles. If theyre true, then I'd concede that that time was beneficial to his future in a way that a GA job would be. Doubt The Boat had that in mind with this comparison though.

You think Bianco was calling the pitches in 1997?

This is a terrible thread, hiring Bianco as the 3rd asst until he works his way up to the 2nd asst about 5 years later is not even the same as hiring fresh out of the minor leagues Gibbs (oh, 1 year removed) to handle the hitting.

But then they get mad at Mainieri for hiring a former player to be a volunteer assistant

because someone was good as a player does not make them qualified to be a coach. i don't care how many all-pro teams Mawae made, hiring him with no coaching experience would have been no different than Mainieri hiring Gibbs

That's sorta just a dumb opinion

if the coaching experience is the same then you look at playing and life experience and in that regard Mawae dwarfs Gibbs.
