Something to pay attention to regarding this is if the Pirates and Bryan Reynolds can come to a contract extension agreement. If they don't agree they may target an extension with O'Neil Cruz and then draft Crews to hopefully build around them. If they come to an extension with Bryan Reynolds and O'Neil Cruz then maybe they lean towards Skenes as a top arm to work with.

MLB teams rarely use their current MLB roster to make draft decisions.

Don’t forget the Astros took Bregman as a shortstop in 2015 having Correa on the roster. While he did move to third it wasn’t the plan from day one. He didn’t play his first game in the minors at third until 2016.

I’m drafting Ace before position player, that’s like drafting the best qb and having the shittiest O-line. Imo aces are harder to get

Aces are harder to find than great position players but a 5 tool talent that can play a premium defensive position is harder to find than an ace.

Make them face each other!!!
Skenes gets strike out he goes first
Crews gets a hit he goes first

I would usually agree, but I think this is one of the situations where they will take into account MLB roster because both Crews and Skenes will be on a fast track to the MLB. So it will be a near future plan for the MLB team. I think it would be smart for them to take that into account with having those 2 options both likely making a big league roster next season.

I think you have to consider the potential for arm injury with pitchers. I don’t know Skenes arm history but if they feel pretty good that his mechanics will keep his arm healthy then you may have to take him before Crews.

Skenes didn't start truly pitching until college. He was a catcher/hitter first in high school and would come in to close games just throwing as hard as he could. Didn't throw a lot year round as a pitcher like most pitchers now. I think that will benefit him as he won't have the wear and tear of most pitchers his age.

LSU has a pitching coach that has had an extremely high level of success coaching at the MLB level in Wes Johnson. So you have to trust that his mechanics are well optimized.

Part of what would worry me as a scout is the velocity bump that he's shown this year going from lower-mid 90's fastball to consistently topping 100+ in just one off-season. Can his arm handle that level overtime?

If he can last this season without showing clear signs of fatigue or wear, I think a team will be highly tempted to grab him at #1.
