Freshmen and sophomores at the U.S. Air Force Academy can leave or disenroll without penalty before attending Commitment Dinner, when they formally commit to serving their country. After Commitment Dinner, cadets who leave or are disenrolled may face active duty service and be required to reimburse the government for their education. This could be done by serving in the Air Force or Space Force as an enlisted member or by paying the government monetarily. Cadets who don't complete their active duty may also be liable to reimburse the government for some of the cost of their education.
It’s not a big deal, but Paul directly broke a commitment. So the holier than thou post I responded to was funny
Paul isn’t a bad guy etc etc but he isn’t the ridiculous saint like drivel the poster typed up

He left before year 3. He did not make or break that commitment, but he did talk with his coach at Air Force about joining the military once his professional career ends

I dont think the pirates have a bandwagon.

Bruh, he will be a Yankee in about seven seasons, just give it time.

You sign a piece of paper, they literally call a commitment, saying by attending the university you commit to serve your country upon graduation
You simply can break that commitment penalty free if you leave before commitment dinner. But you absolutely are breaking the pledge you aigned while enrolling
I don’t think Paul is a bad guy. Tons of people do this. But the holier than though post the guy made regarding commitments was ironic considering

It seems to me that he has every intention of keeping that commitment.

According to Nightengale's piece, Skenes had always wanted to serve in the military. He just happened to be really good at baseball. According to Air Force head baseball coach Mike Kazlausky, he still wants that.
Kazlausky told Nightengale, "He will serve his country in some manner moving forward. It's just going to be a matter of when. Paul and I have spoken about that piece. We'll get him back in the military once his professional playing days are over. It's a big deal for Paul to be able to serve our country."

Did he go to commitment dinner? thats sound like when he would have actually committed.

No, his coaches at Air Force talk about the timing of his decision in the link I posted above

This is what you sign if you actually are interested in learning
Paul legitimately wanted to serve. But he broke that commitment in what made sense considering his progress. It made sense. I would have done the EXACT SAME THING
It just makes this post fan fiction garbage

When you arrive at the Academy, you’ll sign an agreement (with the consent of your parents or guardian if you are a minor) stating you’ll fulfill the following service obligations:
You will complete the course of instruction at the Academy, unless you are disenrolled by the proper authority.
You will accept an appointment and serve as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force for at least eight years after graduation, five of which must be active duty and the remainder can be served as inactive reserve.
You will become eligible to request a separation from the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force after five years of service.

He seems to value honor and integrity. He signed a contract. Both parties agreed to the terms. He will honor it. He’s not a pussy like all those NFL and NBA players that demand trades.

You sign the commitment and pledge before you ever attend the academy
Commitment dinner simply is when you can no longer break the commitment penalty free

I too can look up an FAQ section on a website

You commit to continuing your education at the academies and immediate duty before day 1
That doesn’t come after sophomore year. You were simply mistaken

Pirates had what turned out to be the misfortune of picking first in the 2021 MLB draft and took Davis the catcher from Louisville who has done nothing. As it turned out there were no college superstars turned Paul Skenes in that draft. The second pick was Leiter from Vandy who has done nothing. A couple of high school shortstops are well thought of: Mayer/Red Sox and Lawler/D-Backs.
But picking first in the draft in any other year you’d expect that guy to be already in the bigs (if coming from college) or right on the cusp at least (coming from high school). As it is, the Pirates got an at-best platoon catcher.

Read your own quote: “unless you are disenrolled by the proper authority.”
His commitment to the rest of that ended once his coaches & whoever disenrolled him from the academy BEFORE he attended a commitment dinner.
He still plans to serve in the military after his professional career so I guess we’ll see what he does then if you want to act like he doesn’t honor commitments

Dude Paul is a great guy. But he isn’t a saint that will fulfill all commitments and terms if it is directly a harm to his own personal life. That was the only point in this. The dude made a ridiculous post while also taking shots at entire leagues of other players

This thread is how you complete the "turn a conversation about MLB contracts into a discussion about military academy committments" drinking game.

This thread was dumb from the original post
Skenes isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’s a pointless thread
