Only Terrace Marshal and maybe Ed Ingram can go pro early.

At least we won't get gutted by the NFL for once, right?

We need a break from early exits. We are 15 scholarships short of 85 right now. That means you are missing 17% of your roster. That's where all of your depth should be

Wrong

The culture around LSU football for over a decade has been getting to the NFL as soon as possible. It’s been a double edged sword, it attracts great players and it ushers them out sooner than they probably should. But only a handful have made objectively bad decisions so you can’t really fault many of the guys.

I expect a bunch of underclass men to leave early as usual.

Have a feeling some of the sophomore players will opt out of their junior year and wait for the NFL draft. There is one All American player in particular that I have a sneaky feeling will opt out of his final year. By allowing players to do that has started a trend and it will not end especially those players who are excellent. Why play another year when your NFL draft stock cannot improve. Just saying

People have been talking about players opting out for over a decade like it’s an inevitable trend and it took a pandemic for only a few top players to actually do it.

Stingley isn’t opting out next year.

Until LSU can change the culture of draft eligible players, with Low draft grades, to not declare...LSU will growing pains!

Clemson, A1 are the prime examples of draft eligible players with low draft grades returning and able to compete for the CFP year after year.

Najee Harris/leatherwood/devonta all would have been drafted. Etienne would have been top 3 rounds. LSU has had 6+ players in the last two drafts, declare early and not get drafted. Those players, should return, improve draft stock...they also help mask the growing pains of inexperienced players.

Now in Os defense, he did get CV/TS/jS to return...opt out hurt!! Which is the same to declaring lol. But if he can convince others to come back year after...LSU will compete at a high level and not have dramatic up and down years.

Honestly a great time to be that short of 85 with the COVID eligibility rules for this season.

The problem with this line of thinking is that you’re assuming all players can improve their stock.

Look at a guy like Toby Weathersby. Toby was a solid player that had multiple concussions at LSU. He left early and went undrafted and was on a practice squad for 2 years. He wasn’t going to get any better by returning to LSU and would only risk more brain damage. Instead, he stopped having to go to class and made $8,400 a week on the practice squad. He made the right decision.

Look at Thad Moss too. Moss had a great 2nd half of 2019 but is still small and not athletic for a NFL TE. He couldn’t improve his stock either, plus he had multiple bad foot injuries. Now he’s on IR in Washington with a $400K salary. He made the right decision too.

We will lose more underclassmen than we should this year, just like every other year.

Good post, this isn’t like the Malachi Dupree days where a 5* left to go undrafted.

I understand and agree. My point is to the amount of low draft grades / UDFA that leave year after year. That’s the problem! Are there exceptions...absolutely!

Like I posted, LSU had 6+ in the last 2 years that went UDFA...how many over the last 6/7/8 years? Compare that to Clemson/A1 over that span...that’s why they’ve been able to sustain a level of success above LSU. They are able to mask weak areas on their team and provide valuable depth with players returning.

That helps them “reload” instead of rebuilding or saying, next year is the year. Talent isn’t the problem, experienced returning talent is.

If LSU has players with success as Najee/etienne/leatherwood/devonta...they all had high to mid round grades...Do you think they come back this year?

He made the right decision too.

Just bc a player declares early, goes UDFA, but eventually get picked up, doesn’t necessarily means the right decision. Yes, there are exceptions. Once again, it’s the amount of players declaring early every year that or low to UDFA.

Apply that to Clemson and A1, their level of sustained success would be greatly affected.

Want to be ELITE and compete year in and year out?? You have to slow the Amount of declaring early...not the top draft picks (rds 1-4) but the late rds and UDFA. If you can’t see that...not sure how to explain it.
