This is a very sad day. Shepard could easily do what Robinson did at Michigan. My feeling is that Shep should transfer and wait a year to play elsewhere either as a QB or receiver. The main reason why is because he is so young and his body has not filled out enough to go to the NFL yet. Physically his is just not ready for the physicality of the NFL.

Lester I also love RS but do you really think he was going to start next year? He didn't start this year. I really think he is make the best choice for his situation
If Randle leaves he would have saw a lot more snaps, which means he would have gotten the ball a lot more.
maybe not a #2 WR by definition, but a lot more looks considering the lack of depth behind him and Odell Beckham

The big deal is he was phenomenal. Then got to LSU, wasn't given a chance to compete for his natural position even though it was promised he would. And the rest is history. Worst choice ever made by coming to LSU.
Everytime we put him in at QB (few times I know) we would have to call a timeout because he was confused or forgot the play. He seems to have a hard enough time figuring out where he is supposed to line up, much less knowing where everyone else is supposed to be. I really like the kid and hope he stays to see what will result from (at least hopefully) a much improved QB situation. You can blames Miles and the rest of the staff on Shepard's lack of production but at some point you have to look at how often he has dropped passes. OBJ came in and in his first year proved to be everything Shep was supposed to be. Hopefully this is only a knee-jerk reaction and he will give more thought to it and return next season.

We were definitely the wrong system for him.
I think he could do well in a slot receiver role.
For all those bashing him as not being a good player, how can we really know how good he is if he only touches the ball 3-4 times a game?
Why waste another year playing for a team that doesn't use you properly?

Probably feels like he will not start next year and to be honest his draft stock isn't going to go up enough if he plays next year to justify staying. This is probably a good decission believe it or not.
Russell Shepard leaving for the DRAFT is the worst decision since Jevan Sneed at Ole Miss....
At LSU it can only be rivaled by Trev Faulk.
i.e. --- UNDRAFTED.....
I can't see any team drafting RS and as an undrafted free agent --- how is this "doing what he has to do for his family and himself"?
Crazy talk -- but crazier things have happened, I suppose.
Now if he TRANSFERRED to a FCS school to PLAY for a year - I could understand... but the NFL Draft --- he'll just be blowing his final year of college --- because I cannot see him being drafted by an NFL team.

Good for RS - don't blame him a bit.
He's a great talent, and 3 years later we still can't figure out how to get him the ball in space. Monday night was obviously the straw that broke the camel's back. Hate to see him gone - he's great those dozen times he gets the ball each year - but I'd probably do the same if I were him.

you're comparing RS to Keiland Williams ?? :
so you're that guy that still categorizes players by their subjective .. advertising .. marketing driven recruiting star ratings three years into their average college careers ..

Funny how a lot of 5 star guys are overhyped under Miles. We were so awesome here Keiland Williams couldn't start for us, yet somehow managed to start NFL games.
Shocked that it took this long for KW to be mentioned in this thread.
The parallels are obvious.

Why would someone leave to be an undrafted FA?

we need productive players on the field .. not "great guys"
he was productive, when used right. specifically on the ground.
he leaves with a 6.6 YPC average, yet somehow we never got him involved consistently in the run game.
and he had 13 catches this year, 4 went for TDs.
i'll take him any day over a 'talented' cry baby like Jordan Jefferson. Shep was a team leader, and will be sorely missed if this is true.

Shepard needs to TRANSFER and play somewhere else at QB or Reciever. This is a terrible mistake.

He's not ready for the NFL. He gets thrown around like a rag doll.
I can't blame him for leaving, however. Our offense is shite for receivers.

Keiland Williams got caught in a log jam .. Shep didn't stand out ..

Are you being serious? He will get drafted without a doubt. Probably in the 4th or 5th round but he will be drafted. One thing you need to think about is he is probably going to have a great combine. RS is extremely athletic and I bet he runs a 4.4 One thing we have never used him for is Punt and Kick Off returns which I bet he would do really well

He was a stud when he ran the Wildcat early in his career.....screw J Lee we should have used RS in the Wildcat on Monday. I doubt Bama would have been prepared for that!!!!!!

No, I'm comparing there situations. Both highly touted coming, both labeled as busts.
Posted on 1/11/12 at 5:39 pm to Lester Earl
I'll agree that he had his moments in spots .. but there were more situations like Randall leaving a Bama DB that had an angle on him in the dust for a TD that caught Shep from behind from 12 yards away with no one in front of him in key situations than those spots ...
