Pretty big reality check on kids graduating HS today without being taught on how to properly study, or succeed in academics.

i wasn't taught either. i friggin' learned it to survive. i think what's happening today is that many high schools are giving degrees away and not challenging the kids while in high school. therefore, when they reach college the kid doesn't know how to work for it. also, many kids today NEVER FAIL at anything. mommy and daddy make sure they don't. i know more than one parent that does their kids homework and one that does it for their kid in college. this girl that was crying because she bombed is a perfect example of a person that has never been challenged and just gives up when they are. her response should have been to be mad as hell at herself and go and make it right; quit your damn crying and go back to a college that will take you and get your damn degree. as an employer that hired many people i noticed a huge growth in that type of person; people that just give up and cry. it's damn sad and it's my generations fault for coddling the hell out of our children.

If they shut down the tigerland bars then maybe the graduation rate would go up to maybe 66 percent.

like hell. without the mental health improvement these establishments provide, the graduation rate would plummet.

I have never understood why so many people look at parents helping their kids with homework all the time as a good thing.

Whenever I had a useless school project my dad would help me get materials, or provide me with a good word processor, or drive me to the library or whatever--but in terms of helping me do the actual assignment, it just seems completely foreign to the way I grew up.

I know in some countries like England many schools don't have homework. They just have kids stay at school until really late in the evening so that they don't have anything to take home.

The one statement that cuaght me offguard was "It's our job to provide students with degrees, not to weed out the ones who think they can't cut it."

It's high school's job to provide diplomas, it's the exact purpose of college to weed out those who can't cut it, and not give undeserved degrees IMO.

I agree with this. College degrees have become less valuable because they are so easy to obtain IMO. I know plenty of people who graduated LSU with no problems. LSU is doing fine

The girl is a tad unstable. Crying during each response? That unstability is the reason she fails, not because the university forced her out

A University's job is NOT to provide degrees. That's completely idiotic. It is the University's job to AWARD a degree to those that meet the demands of said degree via hard work and a great set of ethics.

A shame to the University of Maryland, that's no different than a corporation bloating numbers for a quarterly report.

What makes a degree worthless is an overabundance of a said degree in a job market that is saturated with...wait for it.....people with similar degrees.

When you collected baseball/football cards, you wanted the rare ones, not the card that you could get in every pack. This is why emphasis is being put on Masters degrees for a lot of higher end jobs, which in turn will....if this horrid educational attitude sustains (looking at you Maryland)....become the new Bachelors degree.

Todays Bachelor degree is the new GED.

Well, I thought the report was fair and accurate.

When I went to college 20 years ago, the freshman semester(s) were the weed out period. They really wanted to see if you were going to put the effort in and be responsible, if you weren't they had little sympathy..."go home and bag groceries" was the attitude I felt from the professors ...that's a far cry from mandatory tutoring when they see you struggling with the adjustment

I wasn't trained to study (HS) and I struggled the first 3 years of college. Having fun was a higher priority...It was my fault..I couldn't handle my free time very well

I Understand basically what the lady was saying from Maryland.. "We aren't going to let you fail"...with this attitude towards students they raised graduation rates 20 points

I took the CBS report to be a shot at HS public education...

Positive for LSU athletics.. Shep is getting getting plenty of help and accountability.

I agree -- It used to be and should revert to being also about "thinking" or the ability to apply knowledge / analyze/ look for deeper meaning in things as well. To an extent, it does still teach thinking on a higher level.

as for bs's being the new GED's, that depends on where you get your BS/BA whatever.

A Big Ten or Pac 10 education is still pretty valuable. In the SEC, Florida and Georgia are on the same tier as big 10 schools (there's an actual organization / that certifies all these schools, that other sec schools don't meet their standards)

LSU - and alot of the older people here are going to disagree from sheer pride - has become pretty valuable education since about 2002. People attaining degrees before this time period have enough work experience to trump the difference in education skill, but if you graduated from LSU before 2002, you might as well have gone to Southeastern. With that said, a degree from Southeastern is the higher education version of a GED. -- This school literally has finals in which students eat cookies and sign in their names. It's not certified by any reputable institutions, has no admission standards, the whole 9 yards.

If graduation rate is to be used as a standard -- then admission standards should be the only thing raised. Making school easier or babying kids through school only drops LSU down to southeastern's level.

She admitted as much in her interview -- that is why she was crying. It's not failure of highschool to provide education -- its piss poor parenting skills and OR immaturity. Ironically - i don't think such sympathy would have been shown for a male in the same position as her - for all you feminist "scholars" out there.

College isn't for everyone. It's all about time management, some people can do it, some people can't. I don't feel sorry at all for this girl. Grow up, quit crying, and study/go to class.
