one think i think alot of you arent getting is that sheppard as a wide reciever is on the field almost every play. thats important. how many of you clammoring for shep to be in the backfield are the same ones that said its blatantly obvious when trindon was in the game that the ball was going to him. the way it is shep can be thrown to or can be motioned to take a carry, all with the same personnel in the game. shep should remain a WR.

quote:He is in the slot. He is not on the line. He will get a clean release every time if he has any kind of wiggle or if he is in motion. And, his biggest advantage in getting to the outside has been getting the ball while at or near full speed. If you put him in the backfield you take that away.
This sounds logical but in reality they are going to play Shep very tight at the line

I guess I'm not the only one now who likes Shep in the backfield.
I don't understand why they didn't put him back there last year against Arkansas when everyone except Ridley was hurt.

Dexter McCluster disagrees. He doesn't have to be an every down back. That's what Ridley is for. He could be what Reggie Bush was for Lendale White.
we have a winner

So u never saw McLuster at O'l Piss last year.

thats exactly right. shep and ridley would be the 2nd best rb tandem in the sec. he can still line up at wr sometimes and catch a few passes.
WE HAVE ENOUGH SUPER TALENTED WRs WHO WE CAN'T GET THE BALL TO. WE DON'T NEED TO TRY TO TURN OUR BEST PLAYMAKER INTO ANOTHER WR.

Who have we got to throw to him?

I just hope that if Jordan Jefferson continues to struggle that Miles yanks him early and lets Lee have another chance, or like the original poster said get Shep more touches on the ball. There is no excuse for Jefferson to play this poorly at this point in his college career. It's time to step up and do the job at hand.

I agree that sometimes he needs to line up in the slot. As long as the other teams know that he is our primary weapon, they will have to key on him and it will help out with the running game and it will help us to get more one-on-ones for TT and RR. I've said it before; theoretically the perfect way to use Shep is the way the Saints use Bush. The only thing that would hold us back is that the QB has to be able to not only complete the passes but place them to where Shep can work his magic and he must get the ball downfield to RR and TT to stretch the field. Without a good QB the whole thing goes to Hell in a handbasket, so Shep needs to be a running back first and slot receiver second.

Sure line him up at tailback. After about 20 carries you can go help carry him out on a stretcher. Shep doesn't have the body type to be an every down back. His career at the next level will be at the slot.
So Warrick Dunn...

Russell Shepard is Not a Wide Receiver
I agree that he is not a wide reciever, but on the other hand, he is not a running back either.
I think his best position is just where they have him, at slot reciever who some timeslines up next to the QB in shotgun formations or goes in motion across the backfield.

You were saying that we need to put him in the slot to get him the ball at full speed. This is completely wrong.

Strike that, reverse it.

The last thing we need to do is split up the carries even more

motion sweep = RUNNING PLAY/getting ball in backfeild and running (not catching the ball in the slot
