This was decided long ago when the music companies tried to stop the recording of music from the radio via cassette tapes.

It is my understanding from the email, that I can repost this on this thread - thanks!
New hit list for LSU admins bent over taking over radio (Posted on 2/22 at 5:05 p.m.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear LSU admins,
Here is a list of sports entities using Purple and Gold, in conjunction, you might want to go after. This if of course, after you have ridden the world of the evil, nasty people, who have the temerity, to broadcast "FREE RADIO" broadcasts to LSU fans, who live out of state or country.
In no particular order in terms of strength
1) Los Angelas Lakers
2) West Middle School Wildcats Sioux City. IA
3) The Bishop college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12 La Jolla, CA.
4) Western Carolina University Catamounts (too close to a tiger if you ask me)
5) Western Illinois University Bulldogs
6) Hueytown Purple and Gold Classic softball event
7) Salem Academy Girl's school (North Carolina)
8) East Carolina University Pirates
9) Trimpe Middle School Knights, Bethalto, IL
10) Coopertown Middle School Eagles, Springfield, TN
If I were you LSU, I would go ahead and crush the Middle Schools first - they will be easy to take down by the immensity of your crusade!
Then, I'd go after the girls prep school, crush the softball event, and fire my Trebuchets at all of the colleges, while laying siege. At this point, your conquest army should be ready for the Lakers!
Alternatively, you might wish to just start in North Carolina seeing there are several targets there.
best wishes

Dude, that was my line! Actually, my quote was, "If you have two DCs you don't have one", so no copyright violations there!

I think the decision you made and bowing to the LSU athletics dept is non-sense....they are making a money play..
I guess you are going for the official license
of LSU athletics...
pretty soon, you won't allow criticism of any LSU policy....
nice....
is this a joke or is your understanding of basic copyright that screwed?
CanShakers- you don't get the idea of broadcasting vs posting the link of a live broadcast.
TD.com doesn't broadcast anything...posting a link to a free streamed braodcast isn't illegal nor does it have a copyright..
in the same vein...TD.com should not allow links to shows like 1210 The Score, Finebaum or ESPN...they are copyrighted too...
Chicken, grow a set.
Geez....

Suppose someone in the stands does a live podcast.
Or...........suppose a fan is using Twitter on his/her cell phone, typing in play-by-play, 140 characters at a time, to all of his/her followers? Great potential there.
Anyway, I understand the athletic department's side...........if the Geaux Zone sucks and Hawthorne sucks anyway (although I still like Jim......sorry to digress), then those factors should be a tremendous boost to ticket sales and concessions.

Yes. yes they can stop individuals from sharing over the radio feeds with other individuals. Like it or not, LSU owns the broadcast, and the rights to decide how, where, and if it is distributed. Now you may rightfully take aim at their decision on whether or not they should prohibit certain activities. However, their legal right to stop people from "sharing" broadcasts with others is not in question, except here on this board.

The issue here is whether or not TD should allow LINKS to be posted in threads to these "illegal" sites. There is nothing wrong or illegal about posting links. It's up to the individual to click on these links, then use the feed. Just because GZ is pursuing these illegal feeds and doesn't want the links posted is not enough reason IMO to stop posting the links. Until they succeed in stopping these feeds, I say keep linking.

And musicians own songs, but courts struck down their attempts to make it illegal to record songs from the radio and share those cassettes with other people. Even today if you share a radio recorded song over the internet, it is not illegal, an no one has been prosecuted for such.
Now we are talking about non-profit avenues here, and individual to individual sharing. Which is NOT illegal from radio sources.

If profit companies start personally distributing broadcasts of LSU sports, THEN, certainly, LSU could have legal success stopping that.

Not if we are talking peer to peer with facilitators in connecting those peer to peer sharings. Which at least some of the links talked about were.
If it is direct peer to peer and the sharer him/herself does not profit, I have a hard time seeing how anyone can clearly say it is illegal, especially given legal precedence.

All the sites I'd seen were to 3rd party hosting sites (again, like UStream) which profit from the webtraffic generated by people viewing the streams.
quote:True, but unless you are connecting directly to the computer of another user to view his feed, without any 3rd party hosting, then you are not talking about true peer to peer sharing.

So the point is that because UStream is making ad money they cannot allow someone to use their tools to share a paid event. Is that what you are saying?
If so then all is needed is a non-ad peer to peer sharing site.
It is not permissible to share that stream through a p2p network, whether ad-supported or not. The fact that UStream is ad-supported is not the issue here.

Bottom line for me is Geaux Zone sucks. I paid for it and it was a waste of money.

Thanks for the explanation. It was obviously the right decision.

I agree. I'd rather listen to a Missouri Tigers, Missouri Southern Lions, Missouri State Bears, Kansas Jayhawks, etc broadcast for FREE before I PAY to listen to a LSU broadcast on the internet.lol.
Next thing you know they'll make you stop posting game threads so that people won't know what's going on at games. I'm glad you guys post game threads.
