You could say the same thing about Mack Brown at Texas.
Except for the losing seasons and lack of institutional control, sure.

Miles career at LSU is a testament to the reality that in college football, at least 80% of your success happens on National Signing day. What separates the men from the boys after that is still coaching. But, the reality is, unless you are completely incompetent, if you kill it on NSD, you're going to win better than 60% of your games as HC even if you don't actually go TO the games yourself. Great coaches who can't recruit, fail. Period. However, great recruiters who are middling coaches can have decent careers. Great recruiters who are good coaches will occasionally dominate. Great recruiters who are great coaches are nearly unbeatable. The reality is, Miles is(was) a great recruiter. Unfortunately, it's become pretty apparent that he has a tendency to under-perform his recruiting classes. And THAT reality is what always ends up getting middling coaches. EVENTUALLY, the life blood.......the overwhelming recruiting will get em. Miles has been getting highly rated classes still.......but, QBs treat him like a pariah. And, he's had OBVIOUS holes in his recruiting elsewhere. He's loading up on stars, but 5 star "athletes" can't play offensive Tackle. And so, here we are. A middling coach who can no longer overwhelm people with physical superiority.

Miles fell into heaven when he got the job at LSU- especially after his record at Ok St which was Not impressive at all. players win in spite of his incompetence!

I know that ultimately HC are judged by their wins, but I think a lot of people ignore the other things that have made Miles great as well, the other responsibilities of a HC
like recruiting, hiring staff, managing players and staff, being a leader, etc
there are a lot of coaches out there that are probably more sophisticated when it comes to scheming and what not, but fail miserably at the other things that a HC must do (Kiffin and Muschamp come to mind)

What? How many programs have had a better last 11 years than us?
3 maybe 4?
1 sec program?
To act like our last 11 years havent been amazing is just the epitome of entitled ignorance.
Nothing i said in that post was false.
Saban never once faced a national title winning program.
Miles last 5 years everyone loves to shite on has a better win loss record than Saban's tenure at lsu. Thats a fact.
Saban coached in a sec west where there was never 2 teams with 10 wins and he still lost 12 sec games.
The year he won the west in 2001 the second place west team was 7-5.
Like i said. I want miles gone but i refuse to shite on 11 of the best years lsu has ever had just because i dont like the coach. What kind if fan base shits on its own accomplishments?

Because of the way last season played out, I can see a scenario ( slim, but never say never ) where Miles could win enough games to keep his job all the way to the end of the 2018 season depending on how much political heat and say so comes down from the university president.
Which is not out of the realm of possibility if LSU can not get their top target and how far the coaching list they have to travel.

Absolutely.
I just don't think someone can be referred to as GREAT if their actual COACHING is suspect.
Put it this was. Give Miles exactly equal talent to his opponents and I think his overall record would be a shitfest.
He'd occasionally get it right, but not often

2005-2011 was fine (2008 nothwithstanding) i'll even throw 2012 in there.
those W/L numbers aren't false, they're just that...numbers. do they tell the whole story? do they take into account the state of the program now, 11 years ago, 16 years ago?
okay then. what we accomplished from 2000-2003 is just irrelevant then i guess. and i'll pretend like i don't know who this mysterious national championship coach miles always has to face is..
fact? in terms of W/L numbers, but how many national titles did we win in the last five years? division titles? sec titles? really dude?
aw, well shucks!
what accomplishments? the 2011 sec title was great before miles screwed the team over and went down with the ship.
geee...let's see...
shitting on the early 2000s LSU teams --the team's which helped set the bar for where we are today, like you say, regardless of coach-- to glorify the last few teams which haven't won shite?

The one time he won a title he lost to Arkansas and Kentucky. And they couldn't find another team to go.

That is a mirror that Miles or his supporters cannot ignore...but his excuse possy on this board will turn multiple circles trying to refute it. Unfortunately for them, they will fail much like Miles' game day coaching abilities.

Correct.
However, how many of those years were we one regular season win away from getting to a BCS bowl? Probably about 3 or 4 if my memory serves me correct. I'll give it to him that it was close, but you cannot argue those facts stated.
If he doesn't run the table this season, he is out.
Right?

Stating facts isnt shitting on Saban's tenure. At no time did i say Saban's tenure sucked or it meant shite. Posting wins and losses isnt shitting on a program.
Shitting on the program is saying we have nothing to show for his tenure.
I love how FACTS ARE CONSIDERED SHITTING ON SABAN yet facts about miles is defending him.

quote:What does Saban have to do with any of this.
LSU has had one worse and one better SEC season than Saban in the back half of his career.
quote:Great for him and LSU. In that same season he could not muster a point or even cross mid-field for that matter in the National Championship game against a team he beat earlier in the season. Not to mention even giving Jarrett Lee a chance to even step on the field.
He produced only the 4th perfect SEC season at LSU in the back half also. 1st since 1970 IIRC.
In Miles first 7 seasons(18 losses) he played for 2 national titles going 1-1. Since that loss, Miles has lost 16 games in 4.1 seasons.
So during his first 7 years he averaged 2.5 losses per season, since then he is averaging 3.9 losses.
Let's not forget he has lost 4 of the 5 regular season games and the offense has averaged 16 pts per game during that stretch.
