I didn't ask for a history lesson, these schools don't hire/fire like LSU.
You're the one who's judging the elite-ness of programs based on their hiring of coaches (hiring the "Top Coach in the Nation"). I just highlighted some elite programs that made bad hires and endured down times - like LSU.

I asked you if Mighty Joe Alleva & LSU boosters are gonna bring in the Top Coach in the Nation?
How could I know? No program ever knows if they will bring in the "Top Coach in the Nation" when they're hiring. That's the point of the examples I just mentioned. But LSU does have the money, facilities, fan support and home grown talent to appeal to some hot commodities. How they hired 30 years ago is irrelevant. Things are completely different.

Admit it. LSU's awesome eliteness gives you wood.

LSU Boosters are notoriously cheap. Do you believe LSU can land the Boise State coach, after this season or an NFL Coach?
Fairly simple question, I believe.

Funny thread. Historically yeah Bama is the big dog, just like Kentucky in basketball. I don't think anyone can or does deny it. Since 2001 we're every bit as good as anyone in the country, expecially given the competition. Florida down a couple years... Georgia had some tough teams when Fla was down. Tennessee started the revival of the SEC by playing any and all comers in the 90s.
LSU I think deserves a little credit (and give it up to Miles for being the coach then) for officially ending the Miami period; and to a lesser extent Notre Dame's relevance too. Mauling a national favorite into oblivion helps create the sense of eliteness (is that a word?) that tends to last, it's what makes us feared and hated (and loved too) by people in other parts of the country. Hence you get things like Brent Musburger talking trash to Miles during a Cal-Tennessee game on national TV (you don't hear people referring to say, Oklahoma St or Wisconson's coach during games they aren't involved in).
Has LSU's eliteness gone away? maybe, maybe not. Our coach is getting creamed nationally on style points while going 7-1, which says something. Why aren't we the scrappy kid who just doesn't quit? Apparently because we're supposed to win by 20 and dominate every stat- and why is that if we're not elite?
Not to nitpick, but I have to ask this poster:
Houston? Sooo..... why? We gotta go home and see the folks or something?

LSU is as attractive a job as any team in the country. I am not drinking Kool Aid and think we are the best of all, but name me another SEC school that has a 90,000+ seat stadium, top notch facilities, within driving distance to Houston
Houston? Sooo..... why? We gotta go home and see the folks or something?

How much is Les being paid and where does he rank compared to other head coaches? Fairly simple question.

Dude, we're going to hire Chip Kelly and then we'll have the awesomest offense like we always dreamed of. And no one will dare question our eliteness ever again.

Great city, of course. But it also possesses the best high school talent in the country (well, top three at least).

I will concede the following point to the original poster, to be fair:
Alabama is historically elite, along the lines of Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC etc. They have the history.
Florida put on one hell of a run under Spurrier, and it took years for the rest of the conference to catch up.
But unlike other conferences, the SEC has room for more than 1 or 2 teams. Georgia or Tennessee could slide into the ACC and once stable would become favorites. LSU and Auburn could do the same with the Big 12. Of that group, LSU is the team with the most credence in the last 10 years.

Les did not start out at 3.8 Million. He earned it by winning a NC. His recruit TE Dickson twice for an unsuspecting Tressll was amazing & WR Lafell's catch too.
But here's you answer. It was in his contract. Miles is ranked just slightly behind Meyer at Florida as far as Wins & Losses & behind Saban in Contract monies at Bama. Both Meyer & Miles are ahead of Saban in the Wins department. These 3 have National Championships. That is why they are paid the big dollars.
In retrospect, it would have been better for all, to let Miles go back to his Alma Mater, rather than nail him down with a big contract offer. But Bertman at the time, had no idea, the LSU fans would sh*t all over the NC winning coach.

Ah- good point. Would mention also the closest power school to the entire Gulf Coast region as well.

Give this man a Scooby snack. Well done, Scoob.
I mostly agree.
LSU is the best of the rest - after Bama and Florida. But at long as Cam Newton stays at Auburn, we may find those faux Tigers win a crystal football or two of their own to stake their own claim to the spot we occupied for much of the last decade. For now, Bama is (as they often are) the team to beat. And LSU can make a big statement by beating Bama in 2 weeks.

Ouch! Perfect example of a Coach dujour, but the Irish like his last name.

Not sure how much you know about college football history, but Tulane was once a powerhouse. Yes, Tulane. Also, as you alluded to in the OP, Florida wasn't much to write home about until the mid-80's. LSU was a terror in the 30's when Alabama wasn't crap. There's a reason that Bear Bryant has a museum and statue on the Tuskaloosa campus. Anyway, we're the 12th or 13th winningest program of all time, behind Georgia. That's pretty elite company.

LSU was 4-5-1 against them in the 80's. You already had 2 losses by 1983.

We've been good, even great, but never elite. I don't know that we ever will be.
Not under this coach and his staff, that is for sure.

Carrell, you're letting your current frustration cloud your memory-
Les Miles is the coach who came here and won 11 games 3 years in a row, destroyed Miami, Notre Dame, and Ohio State in bowls in consecutive years (finishing top 5 each of those years, including #1 once), and had the courage (and I guess extremely poor judgement) to open his mouth and tell the world we're better than USC (this during the time period any LSU achievement had to have some sort "but we like USC better" asterisk), and then had the balls to go win the title that year.
He's been a media target ever since, but there's no denying he was involved in our becoming elite.
