In my opinion, the big difference in the game was LSU's offense really beating Ohio State's defense. I don't believe that Gholston had a single tackle and even though Laurenitis(sic) had 18 or 19 tackles, they were all downfield after gains by LSU. I do not believe he made a single tackle behind the line of scrimmage. We scored a crapload of ponts and could have scored more had we not had such a large lead. Ohio State's #1 defense was nor really even good against what most considered an average LSU offense.

I was impressed with several players, particularly Beanie Wells.

You're not kidding. He only had a hole to run through two or three times and made the most of them. The rest of the game he was hit one yard downfield and fell forward for one or two more.

Ohio State's defense didn't fair so well when spread out horizontally. And like another poster pointed out, their receivers were rarely ever open.

Special teams killed their momentum so many times. But I'm not complaining!

Killer nut,

I am with you. JL is a stud and he was in on most tackles and had a bunch of stops near the line. Sure he made some a few yards from the line because he can't control a thousand pounds of beef crashing into his area and it is impossible to be perfect. Remember the goal line shot on J Hester...they met quite a few times although huge pulling guards got in the way also for him to miss opportunities.

I have to respectfully disagree. I've watched the game twice now and I think that it was extremely one-sided. We made our usual adjustments on defense and then the OSU players, as well as coaches looked confused the rest of the night.

As far as our offense, they had no idea where we were going with the ball. Hell we were even throwing to our tight ends for TDs. Something we never see at LSU.

How the hell is he overrated? He had two DT's infront of him that couldn't do shite and always got their arse blown back into him. Having 18 tackles, while also having to avoid your DT's who are getting their asses kicked, was pretty fricking impressive.

Our Defensive Tackle play was !TERRIBLE! last year and it is the main reason why JL looks so poor.

You can't attack when you have a 300+ lbs. Offensive Guard coming at you, but I think that JL could be more aggressive. It is a factor of a few things, but our DT play killed us last year against the run.

I will admit, I have nightmare flashbacks of the Arkansas game when I saw a number "5" on a red jersey out running tigers.

I did not see it as a speed thing , I just saw it as coach miles went power vs power against OSU and won that match up. Sure we had speed, but you guys made alot of defensive stops. Some of it we had miss assignments on and some you stopped us cold turkey. HOwever, I will say this, our D-Line was ripping apart your O-line as if it was paper machete. At every single battle we had mass penetration into your lines. Your QB took alot of hits too.

However JL is studly though, I saw him Chop down Hesters, when he was going in for the touch down. Heard that impact sound on the 3rd play but Hester did break the plane for the touch down initially.

Also, I saw some classy acts from JL that made me respect Ohio alot. How he offer his hand to pull hester up after a play. I did see your freshman, Heywood (Heyward?) Uppercut Richard Dickson our tight end for some reason. I actually felt bad for the guy who slam into our punter.

I've watched the game three times over the past week because the football drought is THAT bad.

There were three things that I thought went to LSU's advantage that decided the game:

1. Chris Wells -- For whatever reason, the coaches of Ohio State didn't seem to dial up successful ways to use Chris Wells, particularly when LSU scored 31 straight. Maybe that should go to the LSU defense tightening up, but if the coaches and the O-line as well could make a few more holes for Chris Wells...man, the game would have been amazing.

2. Passing game -- I hate to say "team speed" but I think that is the single biggest point to bring up about the passing game. So long as LSU wasn't caught out of assignment -- and they were a few times -- the CBs were more than able to keep up with the WRs. On the other side of the ball, receivers were getting open all over the place. Two plays that stand out here are the first two TD passes for LSU; Gary Crowton completely sneaked one past the secondary on the first one, but it still stands that the receivers were getting open for LSU and not for Ohio State. The second one was the corner route LaFell ran for a TD. He just used speed to separate.

3. Special teams -- These have definitely been mentioned already, but if not for roughing the punter in the 3rd quarter and the FG block in the second quarter by LSU, Ohio State probably goes home with a crystal ball. LSU was fairly discombobulated to start and didn't get its game on until the blocked FG, and if the Ohio State player doesn't rough the punter and takes a better angle they block the punt, which swings momentum big time and again probably gives Ohio State a shiny crystal football.

Now I dont know if they would have won. I mean we been down and out before. :) However, it would have been a much more brutal game. Especially if it went into triple overtime.

Well, let's see.

Tangible effect of FG made: 3 points, 13-10 OSU.
Intangible effect of FG made: LSU doesn't have the huge "holy shite were gonna win" emotional swing that it had when the FG was blocked...which means that OSU has a better shot at making things happen.

Tangible effect of punt block: Turnover, LSU doesn't score on that possession.
Intangible effect of punt block: See effect when LSU blocked FG.

Right there, just factoring tangibles, it's 31-27. Throw in the fact that OSU has major momentum and probably capitalizes on the blocked punt...and you get 34-31 OSU.

Entirely possible to believe that OSU would have won solely with better special teams play.

3. Special teams

I guess I was just stunned that special teams turned out to be a strength for us. We've struggled, for decades, really, to have merely solid special teams. Typically we have one strong suit, either great headhunters, or great returners, or an all-SEC punter, etc. Rarely can we count on more than one area of special teams to be outstanding.

ifs and buts will drive you nuts.

I am not sure which game you guys were watching.

It looked to me like LSU has better personnel at almost every position on the field. LSUs defense was a lot better the OSUs offense, and LSUs offense was much better than OSUs defense. LSU outcoached OSU before and during the game.

The score could have been much more lop-sided than it turned out.

The bottom line is that LSU was a better prepared team, a physically more dominant team, and LSU had played a much tougher schedule and were more battle tested.

OSU has a fine FB program, but the only way they beat LSU in the game last year is if LSU beats itself.

If u go back and watch the game, OU drove on us a lot and then killed themselves with penalties.

That is how we lost the two games last year. Stupid penalties at UK and not coming with a blitz on 4 and 10 vs Ark. We let UK hang around and never gave them the KO shot.

I think tOSU d-line got pushed around a good bit, but also the way the LSU O was able to spread them out. For some reason Big 10 teams have trouble w/ the spread. If you look at what Ill. did to them it was almost the same thing.

It is going to be really interesting to see how they hand what Rich Rod shows them at UM.

I've watched the game a number of times, so here's a few observations:

1. Ohio State zone blitzed a lot in the first half, and Flynn made good pre-snap reads and threw the ball to the empty spot. In some ways that was very reminiscent of the VT game. Flynn (and Crowton's offense) are pretty good against the zone blitz. Remember, though, Ohio State still held LSU to their second lowest yardage of the year - it's the penalties that killed them and gave LSU the equivalent of short fields.

2. Ohio State's offense isn't nearly as creative as LSU's. It reminds me of what one of the new coaches at Arkansas said about Casey Dick's performance last year: "It's hard to look good when you're only sending 2 WRs out on patterns". Where's the RB flare passes, TE passes, crossing routes? It was a pretty vanilla offense and that made LSU's job easier. LSU struggled with slot receivers, athletic TEs, and RBs out in pass patterns this year - none of which did Ohio State try to exploit, except for the Saine wheel route early in the game.

With returning 18 from last year, Ohio State is probably the best team in the country this year, and I expect them to beat USC. Wouldn't suprise me to see them in the BCSCG again this year, with a better team than the last two that made it.

IMO, this was the deal breaker in the game.

I thought the exact same thing, which sucks, cuz I'm on the losing end of the deal

Had that not happened, I think it would have led to a really good, close ending game. Instead, we rough the punter which leads to another LSU TD.

I will say, I had LSU's damn songs/chants stuck in my head for a week or two after the game...

USC vs tOSU is one of the game I'm looking forward to watch this year.

And hell yeah, I'm rooting for the Buckeyes to kick the Trojans asses big time.
