1st LSU football game I ever saw was at Tulane Stadium 1959 or 60 LSU Frosh (Baby Bengals) vs Tulane (Baby Billow ??). Jerry Stovall was all over the field. He punted, kicked off, kicked FG's EP's, played defense, offense, special teams. I was one impressed 9 year old. He became and still is my all-time favorite LSU football player.

Had a cousin play on the 1970 LSU frosh team. He had a bad leg injury in a freshman game against Ole Miss and ruined a promising career, so I know that they still played a couple of all freshman games that season.

Rosters were huge with a lot of guys on scholarship. NCAA has cut back to the current 85 limit since then.

from what I gather it resembled the "jv" team in high school.

Back in '56, the stadium would fill for the Freshman game (Cannon, Rabb, Robinson, et al) = it was a bigger event than the varsity game.

1980 or 81, I believe. I know they weren't eligible for the 79 season, because Alan Risher played on the Freshman team.

May be wrong, but I don't remember LSU having a freshman team. I did attend most of the JUNIOR VARSITY football games when I was a student, which were played at Bernie Moore on the old artificial Tartan Turf.

(Some friends and I used to go run/jog on the track and kick "Field Goals" on the Bernie Moore field at night)

Tennessee had a plan to stop Maravich. They prided themselves that he "only" scored 20 a game on them, less than half his average. The plan involved placing some goon on him...maybe two or 3 that would eventually foul out. But in the meantime they would mug him. He came to class after a road trip up to Knoxville looking like a car wreck. Both eyes black, arms and face peeled like he'd been fileted. Said one the the guys didn't trim his fingernails just for him. With not much "meat on his bones" he had a tough road there.

I had friends who played on the freshmen football team in 1968. They were not on scholarship, and only played their freshman year. It was a separate team from the varsity. They were known as the "Baby Bengals". You could walk on and make the team, if you were good enough. The majority of
the players were on scholarship, and not all of the players went on to play on the varsity.
