What does the stat "slugging percentage" mean? Thanks.

It's the number of total bases divided by total at bats. A single counts for 1 base, double 2, triple 3 and HR 4.

Total bases per AB essentially

Total bases divided by at bats.

Seems like an unnecessarily complicated illustration
Just take AB's and divide it by total bases (eta: got that backwards)

It is basically when he gets a hit the percent chance it will be more than a single.

The illustration shows how you get "total bases"

I get that.

I know, I'm not saying it isn't logical or anything. I guess I've never seen a mathematical formula actually explaining what total bases are. It's always just been total bases to me.

I get that.

Maybe.

That formula explains what SLG% is better than anyone else here... It says everything.

Agreed.
I was just making a general comment. I've never seen a full formula actually laying out what slugging percentage is. It's always just been total bases over AB's in my head. I'm not a math guy and thought it was interesting/funny to see it written out in a formula.
