Yes and Georgia does not rely on the portal . They have most talented roster in cfb by a long shot , built with highly ranked hs recruits .

You have to be able to successfully navigate both avenues of attaining players.
HS classes are vital for depth, long term success and your benchmark players.
Transfers are vital for filling immediate needs, depth from portal losses and the occasional high impact player.
The difference is that schools have been recruiting HS classes forever making the transfer portal not really necessary. The transfer portal is only needed because of it's implementation. If it didn't exist it wouldn't be needed. Some see the portal as a positive and easier for the coaches jobs of immediate help but I believe the existence of it only made things more difficult and much, much harder to regulate. Essentially the NCAA said you want anarchy we present you the transfer portal. Have at it. As with most things bringing instant gratification, the long term effects aren't dutifully examined and thought about until they show themselves. Hence the complaints from the coaches now that were all for it when it was just a thought.
Kelly and staff have shown they can navigate both well. Now we await the results of that to see the proper way to move forward. Dabo Swinney somewhat refuses to go all in on the portal and is receiving backlash from those around there. We will see how it works out for him. I believe his premise is the correct one(one of very few things I agree with him about) but I feel he will just be proven to be "behind the times" and will have to adapt.

Is it that big of a deal to get a top 5 recruiting class if you have the Portal?
I'm at the point where I almost prefer the portal. A high school recruit can bolt anytime and immediately play somewhere else. But when you get a player from the portal, they would have to sit out a year if they leave you. It's bizarre, but transfers have more incentive to stay b/c they don't want to leave and sit out.

When you look at recruiting (not portal), the top 5 or so seem to always be the top programs in the country. Depending upon which year and which recruiting service these teams are always there:
Bama
UGA
Ohio State
LSU
Okie
Tejas (although it doesn't seem to matter)
aTm (although it doesn't seem to matter)
ND
USC

But then the top names in the portal (which are few and far between) will navigate to fill instant needs as follows:
BAMA/Little Nicky raided the portal last year:
-#1 OT
-#1 RB-
-#1 LB
-#1 WR
LSU has done pretty well last year and better this year IMO

Yeah and there are only so many of those kids to go around
It will be both high school and portal players

It helps..... I also think the portal is more important b/c you get quality players w a lot of college experience at positions of immediate need. I also disagree w the notion that rankings are b.s. You have a bunch of 5 stars year in and year out like Ala. (especially at QB) you are in the mix for playoffs. Portal is an awesome way to level the playing field for sure. It's been a godsend for LSU.
