Pretty Great Piece on the BCS

""""ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit fumed.
"You look at Michigan and Virginia Tech both bringing a lot of fans," he said. "But is that what it's come down to? Kellen Moore and Boise State, Baylor and Robert Griffin, Kansas State, and Bill Snyder is the coach of the year. But the BCS at-large selections are all about how teams come into cities and fill up hotel rooms."
Rare, and nice, for an ESPN analyst to slam the network product.
Sure, sweet Sugar would have been bubbly Boise State vs. Robert Griffin III.
But not sure the nation is clamoring to see ol' Bill Snyder work his sideline magic.
Dumping the USA Today poll would be the best BCS tweak. The understandably biased coaches are too busy to keep track of their own players, let alone other teams. Worse, the preseason poll ranking is an element of unfair reward/punishment. """"

I really don't understand the furor!
Bowls have always been about selling tickets, hotel rooms and economic impact. ALWAYS!
It's a bowl system, butts in the seats and making money. It's not about fairness and equity.

Playoffs would blow up the control of the "unsexy team goes to the big bowl veto"

Sorry, Boise state does not belong in a BCS bowl

Boise State doesn't even belong in the conversation. Do people just totally block out the fact that they play in the WAC? You know, the same conference that Louisiana Tech is in? I must be missing something with the Boise State obsession.

I don't think a lot of the members of the bowl committees know much about the match ups and teams. I've had a conversation about this subject once or twice with one of the members.

The BCS isn't an ESPN product and the ESPN analysts commonly rail on how shitty they think is.

The played in the Mountain West this year.

This. And I don't understand why the BCS gets blamed when the bowls make the selections themselves. The BCS rankings just set parameters for who the bowls can select. If they decide to get rid of AQs in a couple of years like has been discussed, it will be tougher than ever for teams like Boise to crack the BCS. Bowl selection will go back to the days before the bowl alliance. This retroactive tweaking of the system everytime people start bitching just opens another Pandora's box of potential disasters to be criticized.

Beating Ga to start the season on tv lingered a LOOOONG time. As Ga recovered and made a run, Boise went with them in a lot of minds.

Huge difference. Thanks for clarifying.

Boise St. is now in the Mountain West and next year will be in the Big East. Louisiana Tech won the WAC this year. Just sayin'.....

that's because you understand what a bowl is, how they even came into existance and who started them. people complaining about bowl matchups and relate them to "deserving teams" do not have a clue what they are talking about. and then they act like the BCS or the networks select them. ignorance. reminds me of the saying that if you shut up at least no one knows how stupid you are. the minute you open your mouth proof spews forth.

long before the BCS, there were bowls.....which were always about tourism and filling hotel rooms...
as an aside, how many here remember the Sugar Bowl Basketball Tournament? not sure if there is still a Sugar Bowl Regatta out on Lake Ponchatrain....

Boise State beat UGA, though.

The bowls quit being about money and tourism 20 years ago after Notre Dame got a Sugar Bowl bid with a 6-4-1 record and SEC, Big 10, Big 8, SWC and PAC 10 schools started whining like little bitches.
If we go back to the way it used to be, all Notre Dame would need is a 6-6 record to get a BCS bid.

I agree its not but what if money (bowl committees) know how coaches voted prior to bowl selections. Would that not influence selections? Think about it.
