If the last 4 seasons are added to that calculation, it likely shifts the balance to change these groupings because Ole Miss and UT have made a move up. At least that’s assuming the SEC sticks with this model.
I agree with this. The issue I see that’s throwing a monkey wrench into this is the Alabama Auburn UGA situation. All of these schools have TWO SEC rivals that they just “must” play. And in Bama’s case, they look at both Aub and Tenn as upper level, so putting them with LSU as well gives them three. So to make it work, who do you flip from the upper 8 to the lower 8? And when you do that, then the entire format has to be re-worked.

Bama isn’t one of them

but what about OU, While they are historically a great program, they were pretty mediocre in their first two SEC seasons.
I do think OU will be back...they also had a BRUTAL SEC Schedule...compared to Texas. That should ease up after this year, and Texas will hopefully get a more difficult schedule. OU is a championship program, and has won a NC this century and made playoffs multiple times. Tenn is on the cusp, as it has been since 1998 since they last won a Title. OM just ain't there.

I think Bama gets State and we get Arkansas. This makes the formula work and, while not huge rivals, we all have enough history for the choices to make sense.

this is why I don't think it will be Alabama. That would be 3 very tough permanent games for them, and I don't think the Alabama SEC office will do that. It will likely be Mississippi State, joining Tenn and Auburn. JMO

It definitely makes the most logistical sense because then you could have Ark on rivalry weekend. I think it has to be some combination of the Arkansas Mizzou OU LSU foursome.
So you’re thinking Arkansas, Ole Miss, A&M?

Agree there, but I’ll also say I think the same would apply to LSU. Bama, A&M, Ole Miss would be tough outs. For all the shite that gets talked about A&M on here the truth is the series is 4-4 in the last eight meetings, and the last two losses to them have been thumpings. And we know Ole Miss is now a solid program that just unfortunately for them tends to step on their own dicks at the worst times…

from a logic perspective this makes sense. However, that would give LSU a pretty good permanent schedule compared to some other teams. Not a one of those teams have even won an SEC championship this century. OM and A&M can have competitive teams, but they aren't championship type programs, or haven't been. Arkansas has been down for a while...but are capable of being capable.

I get all of that, but recent performance shouldn’t be completely ignored. OU made its name in the weak as hell Big 8, only having to play two good teams per year and went from there to the Big 12 where it was them and UT above everyone else.
Now they are battling Texas and A&M, both of whom have more money and are both fully engaged (which wasn’t the case for many years) and they don’t have the in-state recruiting that we do to fall back on. It’s not going to be easy for them to maintain their former position in the sport in today’s SEC.
If Venables doesn’t turn it around this season, he’s gone and they are right back in the coaching market again.

A&M has the resources and the AD and booster buy-in to win the SEC now. They were a game from playing for the SEC last year, even with their glaring flaws.
Coaching has been the issue, but Elko may have the potential to get more out of that situation. I could see him winning one there eventually.

I mean, we haven't been very good lately, and especially in 20 and 21.

Oh, I agree....but they just seem to be lacking culture or something. They for sure have the funds to compete on the highest level.

So would you want our permanent 3 to be Bama, Texas and UGA?

It's lame we don't play Auburn anymore. Winning the old SEC West is better than anything in this system. Get off my lawn.

that would be stupid as fk
college football has changed, it makes zero sense to want to play the toughest teams in the conference where the chance of loss is greatly increased. It is fine to have a couple of games a year against top competition, but if you start playing them every week, you will have increased injuries and losses, that is just a fact.

I just read that one of the Tigers' permanent rivals will be A&M. A&M is set with Texas & LSU each year; their third permanent rival isn't set in stone, but is believed to be Miss.State (per Reid Laymance, staff writer, Houston Chronicle).

A&M is one of the three. The other two are up in the air still

Don't overthink it. These will be the pods that create the annual permanent matchups.

Who established those "pods"?
We know A&M is one of our regular rivals. Our other two will likely be Ole Miss and Arky, since Miss St apparently will be hooking up with Aggy
