You know Bama and Georgia run 3-4's.

Good point, and they are very successful at it too. I should have have looked at facts before assuming something wouldn't work.

UGA was in a 3-4 last year for the first year under Grantham and they were middle of the pack last year. Certainly they should improve but this idea that we should play a different base package than what we've recruited for and played well with is ridiculous.

On third and long we've at times put three defensive lineman in. If you want to call that "special" packages feel free, but the idea that we should toy with the idea of changing our defensive philosophy for really no good reason doesn't make much sense.

And even when we've had three defensive lineman we're not really playing four linebackers because our strength is the secondary and not linebacker so we'll go heavy at position. Play to your strengths, and linebacker isn't our strength so why would we do it?

I just think it would be cool having Mingo as a stand up rush LB.

I'm almost positive he's done this before, with 3 other DL. doubt there were 3 LBs on the field though.

I'd like to see them tinker with it on certain passing downs to see if they could get more of a pass rush. Seeing Tyrann Mathieu come off the edge as a speed rushed probably has me a little oblivious.

I never felt our pass rusher was a problem. It will certainly hurt not having Nevis in the middle but will help having Montgomery back. I understand we're just discussing the possibility but we don't have the linebackers to play this and it doesn't make much sense. JMO.

I agree with you it's just something I'd like them to pull out. They could even put Mingo at Olb on the package. I still want LSU to be a 4-3 team but its nice to show different looks to an offense.

We dont have the linebackers to run a 3-4, at any point.

Good point Tbird but if you utilize Mingo, Maclin and even Montgomery as a standup end you could get it done IMO. I may be wrong but I could have sworn that in the first few games last year, Chavis played with a 5-2, which is essentially a modified 3-4.

Baker is waaaaay too small to be used effectively in a 34, and he is probably the best linebacker we have.

Mingo wouldn't be able to set the edge if his life depended on it. There's a reason most OLB in 34 defenses play DE in college.
