Why the frick would Les Miles be coaching RBs? I'm going to need to see a link.

Especially one that was an O.L. who can't even teach good O.L. blocking schemes or at least over see and react to his OL coach?

Porter and Miles' hearts just weren't in the RB coaching game anymore once their baby Hester went to San Diego.

Miles had a WANT for good running back play, but for some reason the fact they didn't actually coach the running backs seemed to hinder that WANT.

I wonder sometimes if miles knows that it's HIS team, and not his assistants.

That's the CEO that is Miles though, love it or hate. He is what we thought he was.

I've heard often that Porter was an arrogant prick and just an arse to the players, which surprised me with how well he could recruit with that persona.
Sounds kinda like Saban.

True, Saban was a dicktator, but he was also the head coach. Not the running backs coach. I think that is where the problem lies. When he recruited, you were signing with LSU and him as your head man.
Porter, while supposedly our best recruiter and having a stupid title of "Associate Head Coach" should not be overruling personnel decisions of our OC who is entirely in charge of the offense. That can almost always lead to issues particularly in play calling.

It's easy to pin the problem on the person after they've left. If Porter and Crowton were'nt communicating, then it's Miles' fault. It his job to make them work together.

to bad KW and CS arent playing in the bowl game. It would be obvious if this was the problem.

Porter was one of the best recruiters in the country, so it is a fact that he had to have some relationship with the athletes.
There are so many assumptions and guesses in this thread that it adds nothing to what the problem is, if there is one.

I believe his recruiting record is why Miles was hesitant, if he was, to discipline Porter. Does anyone know how the politics are for Miles at LSU? Does he have people who would protect someone like Porter, given his record? Maybe Miles took steps and was "asked" to back off Porter. Maybe someone "helped" Porter get a job by giving strong recommendations, because it was time for him to go... since we are all speculating.

It's pretty well known that Miles and Porter are close friends. Getting kids to sign is one thing. Coaching them is another thing.
Porter may be a great salesman when it comes to pitching to kids, most non-running backs, to come to LSU. Once they are here, it is a different story.
As for why this is coming out now? It's been talked about for a while by many, but is usually just shot down because Porter was such a great recruiter. I don't think he's a bad coach by any means, but I think his style and the power Miles granted him OVER the OC does nothing but hurt the ability of an OC, and I am no fan of Crowton's, believe you me.

That is interesting, and news to me. Miles depended on him at OSU and continued to count on him at LSU. Maybe it was a trust factor with Porter that was not present with the other coaches. Memphis seems to love him, so best of luck. His hiring Dubose and Hopson speaks well of his ability to sell his ideas. Good luck to him.

The head coach play the players.

do you really need to sell anything to Dubose to get him to take a job in D-1A?

Porter got the Memphis job for two reasons:
1) He's an alum
and the bigger reason,
2) He can recruit with anyone. He reminds me a lot of Orgeron in that sense. He's a great salesman, but average position coach, never been a coordinator, yet was given the keys to a fledgling program.
Why is that? Because Memphis has been struggling to get recruits the past few years and think recruiting is the key.
Ole Miss thought the same thing and while their talent got better, their team didn't. They'll get to opposite issues once Nutt's poor recruiting comes back.
I expect Ole Miss Orgeron-esque results at Memphis for Porter.

Really? He was BEGGING Coach Studs to go there in a promotion to an OC and Studs chose to stay on as LSU's freaking OL coach. Yeah, he's bringing in those big names ain't he.

Debose? Really? The guy couldn't sniff an FBS job until this after his issues at Bama. After Bama he coached two high schools and Milsaps before taking the DL coach position at Memphis.

Posted on 12/24/09 at 4:42 pm to LSUMafia
Yea I was wondering the same thing. Why did Stud turn down that position when it seems his job could be in jeopardy where he is now. Maybe Miles and more money are the reasons but something does look funny about the situation. But with that being said why did it take Porter leaving to become a head coach before this bs came out? Wheres the proof?

Porter was part of the Problem
Posted on 12/24/09 at 6:20 pm to Tiger_n_ATL
Porter was a great recruiter for the obvious reason.......he was a young black coach in the SEC. It helps sell a program to a recruit's mother when she sees someone she can relate to. He however was not the best coach for the position and the talent.
