Oh geez dude. They pratcie on the jugs. They practice catching balls. Even if you do nothing but practice catching balls, you will still lose focus at times and drop.
The push ups in this case is a tactic that coaches use to punish you for the lack of focus. It's really simple, their not sacrificing ball catching drills to do push ups.

I'll try this in plain English:
Having to do pushups makes you not want to frick up.
That's something that was implemented on my little league team. We had to run wind sprints if we messed up. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.
