Ralph Rhymes at plate

The decision to hit away or bunt is dictated, often, by who is at the plate.

Raph was a double play machine. The bunt was in order in that instance.

Pretty much every study every done on this says bunting reduces the expected value of run scoring. These studies are usually done on MLB data, but considering college baseball has a higher run environment, I’d think bunting there is even worse.

Having watched LSU bunt over the last several seasons I think your point is an absolute certainty.

Didn’t Leon Landry hit a similar HR against Cal St Fullerton in a regional?

You recruit a hitter to hit in timely situations. Yesterday was the perfect time to give the kid a chance to get use to high pressure situations and show him the confidence you have in him.

I was waiting for someone to finally point this out.

Yes, it is MLB numbers, which does make a difference b/c your average college defense is not statistically as good as your average MLB defense for balls in play, but SAC’ing with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs barely increases your chance of scoring one run, not multiple runs.

1. frick this whole sacrifice an out to bunt guys over when we’re down 2 in the ninth

2. Evidently PM hates to bunt; I really don’t know where this idiotic idea came from

I got no problem with letting Beloso swing away In that situation, and I’m glad it worked out. However, for a team to win that tourney held in Omaha, you have to be effective at bunting when it makes sense. Big park. HR’s during the season are long fly outs there. Gotta be capable of a short game when you need it, of course, considering who’s batting and if it’s the right situation. I don’t particularly care for small ball, but teams who are good at it have eliminated many teams who aren’t good at it in Omaha.

Drag or push bunting for a hit = awesome and can be a game changer

Sac bunting = weak sauce

If you are playing percentages, what play has greater chance of working?

What percentages are you referring to?...only one matters and I guarantee you don’t know it....if you do, Please share Beloso’s percentage when bunting? I am curious.

Jesus this is dumb. Rhymes had the LSU record for batting average at .431 that season and you’re pissed Maineri let the best hitter in school history swing away?!?

Anyone remember LSU in the CWS several years ago? 9th inning. No one out. 2 runners on base. Ralph Rhymes at plate. PM let’s him swing away & he grounds into DP. A bunt & a base hit ties game. Evidently PM hates to bunt but every player better learn how. From a percentage standpoint which play has greater chance of working? HR or bunt? Yeah the kid hit a HR yesterday. May not happen next time with, let’s say, a critical SEC game on the line.
