lazy sportscasters have completely ruined the term

the spread option rarely has more than 3 receivers, and it often has 2. it's not even a spread often

it's just more spread than using wingbacks or multiple TEs and/or a FB around the OTs

They should have him roll out more with protection to his side so he can throw or run while he's already on the move.

The spread option is emrely a variant of the spread. But because it is outside of your preconceived notions, you reject it as not really the spread. It is. Sorry. While I agree sportscasters are lazy with the term, you are guilty of the same sin here.

Some teams use the spread as a pass-first offense while others use it as a run-first option. The Texas Tech Air Raid offense is probably the best example of a passing spread offense. But they are not the only form of the spread. WVU and now Michigan ran a run-first spread under Rich Rod. The spread itself creates gaps by "spreading" the field, hence the term. How you exploit those gaps is up to the individual coach. If you become locked into "the spread must be pass first" or "it must be run first", you miss out on all of its benefits. You can run the offense however you like, even if SFP doesn't approve.

it's a variant of the option

in 9/10 cases, it isn't even that "spread"

they don't even use the same blocking schemes. the spread option uses zone blocking and the spread uses man blocking

every offense creates gaps, and 3 WR pro sets do this by "spreading" the field (esp by east-west routes)

pro-style is not "the spread"

it's 2 separate offenses with entirely different fundamentals and bases

you can run both within the same system (tony franklin was good at this), but you can run any offenses within the same system. LSU uses pro-style, option, pistol, spread, and spread option
