He should investigate more on this game. Like the 2 hits out of bounds(at least it looked like it, and CBS never played it back from a different angle) on Jefferson and Ford that were not called. And did you notice the holding by Bama when we had them pinned back to the 4 yd line? Our LB was ankle held and looked like a wheel barrow trying to tackle TR. Also when TR broke one long run one of our tacklers was wrestled to the ground No calls.

wow, did Steele really write that? If so, remind to never pay attention to anything he ever writes again. It was like reading a butthurt Bama fan.

Because he IS a butthurt Bama fan.

shite, Steele has been a big 10 homer type guy for years and years now.

i picked up one of his preseason guides over 5 years ago, cause it "appeared" to be legit and perhaps insightful. it didnt take me long to realize the guys big 10 bias and that even though his guide was crammed with statistics, it wasnt distilled into anysort of accurate, meaningful analysis.

ive ignored phil steele since then.

To put that quote in context :

quote:

my favorite team each year is the team I pick #1 in the magazine and my favorite teams are the ones I have picked higher than all the other major magazines out there. I then said that each year I establish a list of my favorite teams for that year

He picked Bama #1 to start the season. That was certainly a very good pick. Most people in this thread probably think they are the 2nd best team.

He wants to be able to spout off his most accurate magazine crap when the team he ranks #1 wins it all.

LSU, otoh, was ranked #7 in his mag.

amazingly....?????!!!!!!

phil knew the refs were on the take and was amazed that the call was an int.

phil should now know (just like au) that the take has to be over $180k.

On the INT by Reid, I don't understand how idiots like him cannot see that the TE for Bama and Reid were battling for the ball on the way down. You can watch it 1000 times and it will still show the same thing. For the refs to use instant replay and still find it LSU's ball the call has to be correct.

I think there's little question the call was absolutely correct.

I was actually stunned when they ruled it LSU ball, because, in real time, it looked like a catch and a late strip (after receiver downed by contact). The very first replay view they showed during the game, I guess was the normal angle, and it didn't change my opinion.

The reverse angle, however, is absolutely clear - the ball is moving well before contact with the ground, by the time contact with the ground is made, Reid was already demonstrating mastery of the ball and possession. The ONLY possible argument for Bama is that the TE's single hand is equal to Reid's 2 hands, because, briefly, that's how it was.

The Refs apparently never considered a simultaneous possession (which would have been resolved, in my opinion, in Bama's favor), and I don't think the visual evidence on replay warrants. Apparently the replay officials agreed, and confirmed the call. It was reviewed by the SEC office and deemed the correct call.

(Remember, though, they said that about Peterson and about the reversal on the holding against Doucet @ Auburn, so take league confirmation FWIW).

All of the critical calls made in the game were correct, in my opinion. There were many non-calls of holding, particularly of our DEs by their OTs. But, that's a battle for another day.

was at the game, saw it live & could immediately tell it was a pick. Of course I probably had the best view, sitting right next to TGBFTL about 20 rows up

Typical. Guy made a stupid prediction. Hell, his first was even worse until he changed it. He originally thought it would be 24-6.

His preseason mag is garbage too and shows what is wrong with preseason rankings to begin with when you make rankings based on your perceived outcomes to end the year. I know he's just selling mags, but the guy is terrible.

i'll never buy another Steele mag, he thinks he's got everything figured out but more often than not he doesnt know shite

"Tough loss for Alabama to LSU. Bama’s first possession got to the LSU27 but they missed a 44 yd FG. Bama’s 2nd poss got to the LSU23 but they lost 10 yds then missed a 50 yd FG. Bama got to the LSU24 but they lost 7 yds and brought in their short kicker to attempt a 49 yd’r but it was blk’d. Bama got to the LSU17 but settled for a 34 yd FG to lead 3-0. At this point Bama had a 181-55 yd edge but only led 3-0 and LSU, thanks to an offsides on 3&1 and a defensive holding on an incomplete pass on 3&4, would get a 19 yd FG on the final play of the half to tie it. LSU was int’d and ret’d to their 4 but a penalty brought it back to the 35 and Bama settled for a 46 yd FG, 6-3. LSU got a 33 yd IR to the UA15 setting up a 2 yd “drive” for a 30 yd FG to tie (14:13 4Q). Richardson ripped off a 24 yd run to the LSU28 and Bama had a great call. Maze, out of the shotgun, threw deep and the TE caught the ball, came down on his back with it at the 1 yd line but the LSU DB wrestled the ball away from him and amazingly it was ruled an int and LSU got off a 73 yd punt with 9:00 left but neither crossed the 50 and the game went to OT. In OT Bama took a sk and missed their FOURTH FG of the game, a 52 yd’r and LSU got a 25 yd FG for the win."

I will FIFPS (Fix it for Phil Steele):

"Great win for LSU. Bama’s first possession got to the LSU27 but they missed a 44 yd FG. LSU then drove into Bama territory but rather than attempt a 58 yd FG, LSU chose to punt and pin Bama inside their own 5. Bama’s 2nd poss got to the LSU23 aided by a personal foul penalty on LSU but the Tiger's defense rose to the occasion. The Tiger's D stuffed Lacey, then dropped him for a 6 yard loss. That together with an illegal participation penalty pushed Bama back out of FG range. However, Saban chose to attempt an unmakeable FG of 50 yards that was not even close. Following a costly INT by Lee, Bama had two big plays to get to the LSU24 but again the Tiger's D stiffened. Two consecutive negative plays (a tackle for loss and a sack) again put Bama out of FG range. Inexplicably, Saban sent his short range kicker out to try a 49 yd FG, which was blk'd by LSU. LSU then drove into Bama territory but was stopped when a combination of good defense and penalties stalled the Tigers. Again, Miles opted to punt instead of attempting a 50+ yard FG and LSU pinned Bama inside of the 5. On that possession, LSU committed another 15 yard penalty and inexplicably left Richardson uncovered for a 39 yard pass play to take it inside the RZ for the only time the entire game (including OT). Bama was stopped in the RZ and hit a 34 yd FG to take the lead, 3-0. LSU then marched down the field on a 74 yd drive, capped by a 34 yard pass to Shepard. Bama was fortunate the pass was underthrown or LSU would have taken the lead. Instead, LSU settled for a 19 yd FG to tie it at halftime. At this point Bama had a 181-139 yd edge. To start the second half, LSU was int’d and Bama ret’d to the LSU 4 but a penalty brought it back to the 35 and Bama settled for a 46 yd FG, 6-3. LSU then drove to the Bama 34 but a combination of penalties and negative plays resulted in another Brad Wing punt in lieu of a 50+ yd FG. LSU got a 33 yd IR to the UA15 setting up a 30 yd FG to tie (14:13 4Q). A big pass play followed by a Richardson 24 yd run had Bama at the LSU28 and Saban got cute. Maze, out of the shotgun, threw deep and Bama's huge TE allowed this week's national defensive player of the week to wrestle the ball away from him prior to hitting the grown. LSU got off a 73 yd punt with 9:00 left but neither crossed the 50 and the game went to OT. By this point, Bama was dog tired. LSU's depth on defense and at RB took over. In OT Richardson dropped two dump off passes and Bama made an inexcusable penalty. On third down, rather than run Richardson to help the FG attempt, Bama attempted to pass and LSU skd them. Bama had to attempt a desperate FG but everyone in the stadium knew it would be missed and it was. LSU then took over. RB Michael Ford should have scored a TD but stepped out. Drew Alleman kicked the winning FG. Bama frat kids started crying. Bama fans without degrees started making excuses. Les Miles laughed."

Great Non-Phil Steele summary with LSU bias to offset Phil Steele's infatuation with BAMA.

This game has been spun a zillion different ways since it ended, and yet the score hasn't changed at all. Amazing.

you pretty dumb if you think its "journalism"

Dude is a PROFESSIONAL HANDICAPPER.

His "job" is to pick games ATS and offer his OPINION, on why he thinks Team X will beat Team Y and this is his review of why his pick was wrong.
