Pat White on LSU & Nick Saban

An interesting read......
******************************
But the quintessential Pat White story, the one that covers the whole file of quarterback questions and smart decisions came during his college recruitment. He initially chose Louisiana State. It was close to his home of Daphne, Ala. It was the team he followed as a kid. His mom was pushing it.
LSU recruited White as an, "athlete," and he knew what that meant. Quarterback wasn't promised. It probably wasn't even on the radar. But when West Virginia began recruiting White only as a quarterback and had a spread offense to custom-fit his skills, LSU changed its tune.
Its coach told White he could play quarterback.
"I didn't think they were being honest," White says.
Its coach also said the previous year's top quarterback recruit, JaMarcus Russell, might not have the brains to play quarterback. Like White, Russell was from the Mobile, Ala., area. He knew Russell.
"I thought, 'If they were going to say that about him to me, what were they going to say about me to a [recruit] a year from now?'" White says. "I just didn't trust what I was being told."
So White went to West Virginia, started four years, won four bowl games and set records as a passer and a runner. But here's the kicker to that story: The LSU coach was Nick Saban, the guy who took lying to a new level a few years later as Dolphins coach.
So give White points for figuring in a few weeks what it took everyone in South Florida a few years to understand. But then White's always been a quick read, as well as hard of hearing to detractors.

every coach does this, it's the nature of the game

Probably a good call. May have to do some "creative" editing with the subject line

Every coach tells recruits that his prized recruit the year before is too stupid to play the game? Awesome...sounds like a winning formula.

Doc, you dont actually think White is going to be good in the NFL do you?

ok, when russell shepard never starts a game at quarterback, what are you gonna say then? coaches say whatever they need to say to get guys to sign. that is a fact regardless of what you see through your purple and gold sunglasses, and i highly doubt saban said russell was stupid. he probably said something like he hadn't won the starting job yet because he hadn't yet fully grasped the offense

RS has been very clear that all Miles promised him was a shot at QB...

We all know there's some half truth's, etc. being told to recruits by coaches but White was on the money with not trusting Saban. What he was told was detrimental to Pat White's career, it was also putting down one of his own players who was already on campus. Saban is just a douchebag, everyone knows it but the gumps. Sad really!

no shite, and do you not think that pat white would have at least gotten a shot at quarterback? i do. you can't not give a guy with that kind of ability even a look. it's just funny how people search high and low for anything that can be construed as negative pertaining to saban. he hasn't been the coach here in 4 years, get the frick over him. the obsession some people have with nick saban looks so pathetic. nick saban is a dick. everyone knows it, drop it

he'll be perfect for that system they run in miami.
but he was far more than a gimmick QB in college.

with Russell and Flynn running a Jimbo offense, I can't state with 99.9% certainty that he wouldn't have gotten a shot.

I reserve the right to make fun of whomever is the current coach at Alabama in whatever way I can...thanks though for the advice.

Ok, refresh my memory here:
Saban 1 MNC
White 0 MNC
Further White was useless against PITT to get to the MNC, which provided Les the chance to get his.
Nothing against White, but I'm happy we had Jamarcus!
