Now, I ask why on earth would a Coach continue to use the running QB to start every game?

If I couldn't figure it out I'd probably bang my head against the wall too. Keep it up and it might understand it eventually.

We ran the ball 400 plus times with JJ. We ran the ball 90 times with Lee. The chances, clearly, are better that we ran the ball better under JJ last season.

Well, we played one game, so I am not ready to conclude anything.

And BTW- my argument is/was not about Lee and JJ, although I know the thread started that way. But I will argue that a running QB is not a necessity.

But will you admit that it is an advantage?

No.

If it was such an advantage, wouldn't alot more teams put someone who could run behind center?

I think the biggest advantage is a mobile QB- a guy who is pass first, run second (second being to avoid blitz or busted play).

That being said- I don't think we have one of those guys on our roster at this point.

I think that's a little tough to say when comparing an entire season against a single game that's against a top 5 opponent.

Let's wait a couple more weeks before we really decide. I'm of the opinion that I'll take a pro style QB any day of the week over a running QB. Michael Vick is a freak athlete and for years has been the best at that, but I prefer Brady, Manning, and Brees. The offense seems more fluid with a guy like that and there is at least the threat of a passing attack, which could be especially useful if you find yourself behind late in the game when your running QB just isn't gonna cut it.

I liked how the offense looked, it seems much more balanced and improved. And I expect that Lee will get more confident and put together more than a couple 200-yard games. If even a few of those drops that were right on the money were caught he would have had 150ish.

A QB that sucks and can run coupled with a shitty OC is probably better than than a sucky one that can't run...

You should have taken statistics in school.

Before you say something about sample size, 100 should be more than enough.

Of course not, but the majority of teams that have them use them often if not all the time.

Good analysis Doc. Thanks for another well thought out sensible post. I really think that the Tigers are a few plays away from taking off.

Look at how teams are running the spread. Oregon would have loved to have their QB run it more except for the fact that our D line bottled them up. Schemes like the wildcat to exactly this.
First you have to decide your offensive philosophy and then hopefully recruit that.
You have to have a true runner for that to work. But when is all is said and done all of our QB's are middling passers, I'd like to have runner back there to stretch out the defense over one that is more likely to have a defense collapse in on him.

Yet you think somehow averages will magically increase as the incidents increase. That's hilarious.

A guess a batting average has not increased from 90 to 400 at bats. Ever.

Not without a contributing factor. Without any influence an average will remain about the same.

The threat of a passing game will get the DBs to move back. Nobody fears our passing game right now. So the next best thing would be a QB who is a threat to run. At least he will occupy a defender when we do run.

So you were assuming that Lee, with another 300 running plays, could not have been a contributing factor to said running plays.

I agree with this and I expect that change. I think Lee will settle in and improve the passing game.

Totally agree, but not unless Randall is able to get some snaps on Saturday and prove to be a change of tempo guy. Either way I'm hoping the passing game gets to the point that we won't see a running qb start all season.

Himself as he plays now would not be a contributing factor. A contributing factor would be improved WR play, OL giving him even more time to find an open receiver, or him improving his mechanics. All of these are possible but until those things (or others) happen his average will not change much.
