we had two wins last week and two losses. Today we have a tie. #8 LSU 3 Florida 3 in a driving rainstorm in Gainesville,FL where LSU wore purple jerseys and Florida wore white. LSU also missed 7 field goals.
Florida Field at the time was Astro Turf which made the playing surface slick as glass. While missing a bunch of field goals, Juan Roca from Honduras, nailed a 45 yard field goal in the storm for LSU to go up , 3-0. The Gators looked to take the lead on a 79 yard pass to Nat Moore, later of Dolphin fame. It looked like Moore would score but Mike Williams, LSU's first black football player to play in a varsity game tackled him on the one which to this day ranks as one of the finest plays ever by an LSU player.Williams' tackle tore up Moore's "tearaway" jersey so he had to sit out a play. His backup,Andy Summers, fumbled on the next play and LSU recovered.
After the Gators tied it at 3-3 with 2:30 left, LSU then proceeded to miss two field goals in the final minute. The first field goal with :22 from 44 yards out was partially blocked, but it wound up going towards the Gator endzone and LSU recovered at the 22 with :10 left. Then Rusty Jackson came in to try one and his was wide.
If that wasn't enough, with :03 left and the game tied at 3, Florida's desperation pass --all the way to midfield was intercepted by Norm Hodges by the Tigers to end the game. However, as time expired a full scale fight took place as both teams' benches emptied.
1972 Mike Williams' play vs Florida In this link is "a link" to a brief recap of the 1972 season. At the 49 second mark is Williams' tackle of Nat Moore.

I barely remember there was a game. I was not paying attention to much of anything during that time.

That was an impressive tackle. Had to come from the center of the field and 15 yards back.
