Seems like some people want to defend their answers dealing with baseball with stats. I'll play along. Explain why we are ranked 75th in the nation in homeruns? All I hear about is team batting average and lack of scoring runs. Well there your answer. We do not recruit these type of Bertman players anymore. Takes numerous hits to score runs with our present teams.

Yes, we do. They just get drafted.

Not to mention Watson and Smith have both missed a considerable amount of time this year due to injuries. If they contribute another 4-5 homeruns during the games they missed we’d be ranked around 20-30.

And, on top of that, this statistic has as much or more to do with the ballpark you play in than anything else.

So what's the excuse for the other 74 teams? LSU is not the only school that loses players to the draft. Cabrera was a power hitter who came to LSU and didn't sign.

Name the programs with more wins than LSU over the last 8 years. The program continues to be extremely successful by any measure.

Help me understand what you're complaining about exactly.

He’s asking why 74 teams have more HRs than us I think.

First off, it's not the 90s anymore and nobody is doing what Bertman's teams did. It wasn't so much of the type of guys he recruited as it was the bats and the juice.

The roster limitation has completely changed roster building to where you aren't going to take a chance on a few guys that only play 1 position but will hit 20 homers. Imagine if we had 3 Bryce Adams on the team the last year as opposed to 1.

Lastly, this team is more than capable of hitting homeruns, they just aren't producing. If Hal Hughes can hit a homerun then everybody on the team is callable of hitting several.

Do you know the average national rank in homeruns of the past 7 national champions?

I guess you don't think having more power equals more runs scored.

Costal Carolina lead the nation in homeruns when they won the national title.

Nope. Having better OBP = more runs scored

Just to let you know homeruns increases that stat.

Is 75th bad? That's out of about 300 teams.

Yes, we all know Mainieri in general prefers smaller guys who can run/steal bases and play some small ball. This does contribute to us not being an elite power team.

Zach Watson is a good example of a speedy guy with some legit power though, pretty rare breed in college though.

Our guy with the best raw power, Slaughter, has had his season kind of rocky with going in and out of the lineup. He's your guy who can knock over 10+ HRs.

Let's also keep in mind the field you play on can play a big part of home runs. We DO NOT have one of these baby left or right field walls some teams have. So there's no advantage to us to go out and recruit a bunch of left handed power hitters if our right field foul pole is only 310 feet deep and the right power alley is only 350 feet like Kentucky's.

It does. But you need high OBP guys to have a shot at your “3-run homer.”

LSU hit more homers than all but 2 of the CWS participants last year.

So either we do recruit power hitters or homers don’t matter as much as you say.

We are 45th in OBP. You won't find a national champion that led the in country in that stat more often than homeruns. One of these stats actually scores runs.

Maybe I’m looking at a wrong site. But I’m seeing 35th. Not bad considering you have Hughes in place of Smith right now. That might be ~.80-100 point difference for that position

AS someone who has tracked national average rankings the last 4-5 years to determine which stats tend to lead to success, homers isnt near the top 8 stats to track.

Arkansas and Kentucky were 1-2 in the SEC in home runs last season, how far did that get them in the post-season again?
