You know, everybody likes saying this because it makes so much sense in your head, but: 1. Its stupid to take 2 loss teams over very good 1 loss teams because of this caveat (and this scenario could happen one day) 2. I just don't get why losing to Arkansas is perfectly fine, but losing the next week to UGA (in Georgia) is unacceptable 3. Other conferences (Big 12) don't have to worry about a champion game 4. What conference does Notre Dame have to win to make the NC game?

Matt, thanks for taking the time to respond. I really do respect and admire your work with regards to predicting the BCS standings every year, and I look forward to more of it.

While the perception might be that "everybody" agrees with "win the conference or don't go", there most certainly is a vocal minority (UGA fans in the past, Bama fans this season) that vehemently disagree with this stance. If LSU loses the SEC West I'm sure you can add Tiger fans to this group.

My take on it is this: If you play in the toughest division in the toughest conference, which "everybody" agrees is the SECW and SEC respectively, you may risk losing out on a BCSNCG because of how hard it is to win it.

If Arkansas somehow manages to wrest the SEC west crown from LSU, and make it to the SEC Championship game, it's really simple in my mind.

You've lost your chance, because you didn't win your conference.

Enough with the conjecture, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Although I am a loyal Trojan to the end, I think LSU is the best team this year and I hope to be proven right. Good luck.

All this if and's and but's, is all good and well. But I really don't give a good god d*mn who we play if we get to the BCSNC. CLM with a month to prepare?? I pity the poor bastards who have to play us. This won't be Oregon V. LSU week one coming out of fall practice, or Gump V. LSU off of a bye week. This is 4 weeks of non stop preparation for whichever team we are pitted against. PITY THA FOOLS

It's most likely going to come down to what the voters value.

-Assumption: LSU wins out, OSU loses-

Give more weight to big wins? OU might have the best win.
OU beat 1-loss OSU, Oregon beat 1-loss Stanford, Bama beat 2-loss Arky, OSU beat aTm/KSt.

Give more weight to losses? OU might have the worst loss.
OU lost to bad TxTech, Oregon lost to LSU, Bama lost to LSU, OSU to OU.

Value conference champions? Oregon is the only one to win both conference and CCG.
OU wins Big12, UO wins Pac12, Bama won nothing, OSU won nothing.

Rematch? Maybe some want one. Maybe some don't.

Which one are you going to choose?
------------------
When there are head-to-head matchups:

Would the voters actually decide to slot Bama/Oregon over LSU having lost eariler in the year to them?
Would they keep OSU over OU?

Well in your scenarios it is fine. But there are really good reasons why the "conference rule" isn't in place. Like I said before some teams don't have a conference championship or more importantly don't play in one and second, it would be a travesty in my mind to take a mediocre 2-loss team over a powerhouse team.

Put simply, if we implemented a "conference champion" rule would Notre Dame automically be disqualified from playing the BCSCG?

And in regards to UGA in 2007, it amazes me how they still fail to realize that them being left out has little to nothing to do with the, not winning the conference. They just weren't as good or deserving.

Thanks for this post Matt. I have always appreciated your contributions to the Rant around this time of year. 2007 was EPIC!!! Hopefully we won't see the BCS play out like that again for a while. Hopefully LSU just wins out and it will be that simple this year.

I think this needs a bump. I don't feel like explaining 1000 times why LSU can lose a game

Thanks man. I figured this loss would hurt them since the okie st. win won't look as good now. Thats who I want to play though.

great points but I think if we lose to GA in the SECCG, we will not make the MNCG.

So who goes and why? Note: Oregon and the ACC champ will have terrible computer scores.

Why?

Oregon will have better quality wins -Stanford and didn't lose at home to a horrible team.

Plus Oregon gets and extra game in the Pac 12 CG.

How can OU make an argument now that Okie State has lost? Maybe Okie State will remain about Stanford (which in IMO they should not)

Because OU's computer score would be much better and they would be the easy choice for voters with Bama and Oregon already having lost to LSU

Can I sum up a little?

Computers will like LSU and OU/OSU

Pollsters will not want a rematch? (Ore-GONE/Bama)

LSU is the easy winner with OSU losing. It solidifies LSU as #1 in the computers almost regardless. IF something comes down, pollsters will have to decide amongst all the 1 loss teams, of which LSU would have beaten 2 at least.

Thanks matt for the work you've done on this. I think we're looking at a LSU/OU game also.
