landry needs the A+ for being a beast. no drops, his td catch was clearly pass int yet he still caught it and broke away to score. he also mashed a corner on the obj run

We could have won that game 49 - 10 had we

The refs not calling 2 PIs contributed to this.

not done the typical shite that we always do

We definitely could not run the ball at will on TCU, especially in the red zone.

Our red zone offense sucked arse, too.

Covered

And God knows what will happen when we try to run on SEC caliber D-Lines.

That remains to be seen. Again, first game rust, and the run blocking was good in spots.

There's a whole lotta sunshine up in here today.

Okay.

TCU is not good.

They were ranked preseason. In 2012, the team beat Texas and WVU, was a touchdown down to Oklahoma, and took Texas Tech to 3 OT. Their only ugly loss was 23-37 against Iowa State. For a 7-6 team, they were 14 points from 10 wins. I'm not saying they're great, because the season will tell us that. But to suggest they're not good because we beat them is CLASSIC rant wisdom.

3 dropped passes is B- at best

College players are going to have drops. Landry was exceptional last night, but I guarantee you, he will have some drops this year. I think the thing that separates OBJ, is his ability to get separation (pun = fail). But his athletic ability is off the charts. Don't get me wrong, I love Landry, but OBJ will make or break this season.

Quarterbacks: A
Mett was decisive and accurate. Two throws really stand out: the back shoulder throw to Beckham, and the 15 yard out to Landry from the opposite hash. Both NFL-caliber throws. If he continues to play like he did last night, Mett will be the first SEC QB off the board next April.
Concerns: None really. There was one throw early in the first qtr. where he had pressure in his face, and he made a risky throw falling away, but was lucky to thread it between two defenders. Hopefully, that was an anomaly.

He needs to get better throwing on the run. He did a nice job to elude the defense at some points in the game, but when he takes off, his accuracy isn't as good as it could be. His footwork looked better, his pocket presence looked better, and overall he looked like he owned the position compared to last year.

Running Backs: A-
Both Blue and Magee had nice games. Blue was a bit tentative at times, but that is understandable for his first game back. His fumble seemed to be more on Mett. Magee has been the pleasant surprise dating back to spring. Hilliard looked uncomfortable running the ball.
Concerns: None. With Hill coming back (probably in the Kent State game), I think, once again, we have a great stable of backs.

The fumble was all on Blue....he never grabbed the ball. Mett put it in the basket and Blue just dropped it. we also need to work on picking up the CB blitz better. That will be a problem that other teams will exploit if we don't sure that up.

Fullbacks: B
Both JC and Neighbors had some nice blocks. Thought they played tough. Would love to see the FB dive removed from the playbook, except in goal line situations. Or at least use Hilliard like they did Ware, and let him run it when we are down on the other end of the field.
Concerns: None.

Did as expected. Copeland is too slow to be lead blocker on OBJ reverses though. Maybe use Hilliard as FB in those instances?

quote:

Wide Receivers: A+
What can I say. Monster game from OBJ and Landry. Yes, I could nit-pick about OBJ's two drops, but he more than made up for it in the return game. OBJ will be this team's MVP throughout the year. Dural looks like he will be a good one. Boone remains the reliable veteran. He seems to make nice catches when we really need one.
Concerns: That this will be the last year we see Landry and OBJ in a Tiger uniform.

Minimal dropped passes. Both Juice and OBJ looked very good. The chemistry is there between those 2 and Mett. Hopefully they can stay healthy.

Offensive Line: A
I had a feeling (like a lot of people) that Collins would be the best LT in the league this year, and damn if he didn't look it last night. There was a block he made on a trap play that was a thing of beauty, where he pulled inside and took out a DT and a LB. The whole line was very solid. Not perfect, but mighty impressive. Thought Porter was a nice surprise.
Concerns: Depth. Saw Washington in for one play. Hoping to see a lot of Washington, Fanaika, Pocic, and Austin in the next two games.

Looked good. We need to get better push on running plays, but I think the group we have is going to be a strong point of our team. Seems like having Stud on the sideline is a plus rather than up in the box.

quote:

Tight Ends: B-
Really should be an incomplete with Dickson being out. Gordon is a nice blacker/6th OL. Smith had a couple of balls thrown to him, and could have made the TD catch, but was matched against a quicker DB. He spent a fair amount of time out wide. Would love to see him get in the middle of the field, even from the slot.
Concerns: None, really. I know that Cam will continue to work the TE's into the game plan.

I would agree, maybe put them at a "c". They were average. Blocked where they needed to, but still no threat in the passing game. I think as we get more reps for Smith and when Dickson is back, you will see more from them.

Overall, what I saw from LSU is the same thing I saw from aTm, Alabama, Florida, S.C., and UGA. A lot of potential to make a run this year. Should be a good one.

When TCU played in the rose bowl they totally shut down a very good Wisconsin Running game. The frogs had months to game plan for LSU and did a good job, the fact is LSU had 200 yds rushing and 250 yds passing not too bad against a quality team. I believe the o-line will get better as the season progresses. Middle linebacker needs to be upgraded asap!!

you and I must live in different cfb universes. that tcu defense has been probably the best non sec defense in the country the last several seasons. they don't allow much on the ground even to the best big12 teams and their coverage last night was exceptional in many instances. despite that, lsu racked up a lot of yardage and was balanced. very impressive.

Very - they had guys right there to make plays, and our execution was just a little better. The 1 dropped bomb was a rare opportunity behind the coverage.

Sorry to say but I thought Blue lacked any burst. He did not break many tackles and he did not look like he hit the hole very fast or hard. MaGee was a completely different story. Can't believe Hillard is not more part of the running game.

TCU plays 5 DBs all the time and one sometimes act as a lb. I can see us struggling the first game because of that (also they were interfering like a mofo in the EZ). We should be way better in the EZ after this because we'll only face another defense that good twice in the next 11 games. TCU made us one dimensional in the EZ.

When we spread the defense out and let Magee and Blue run it from the shotgun, we were deadly effective. My God Anthony Jennings on fakes in that formation next year will frick the league up!
