You'd think Saban was on the sidelines in '05, '06 and '07 listening to you. The Ghost of Saban coaches us thru '07 and hauls arse in '08.
Wouldn't Miles have brought the program to it's knees in 3 years if he sucked so bad?

Only if you look at the final lines. Early lines, not so much.

I hardly ever take a gamble, but.....
I always thought lines were to create more vigorish action and went with public perception more than crystal ball methodology. Early +3 would attract more LSU bets to counter a percieved heavier UNC betting spree.
Doesn't the line move with the betting to keep +/- money even? Who has a hand in that besides bettors?
Now I've heard of handicappers who are quite good at crystal balling, but hear they take advantage of the spread, not follow it like Gospel.

yep.
Notice that Notre Dame is favored in ALL their games.
I would have figured Pitt, Stanford would be favored over ND.
They are both 3 point dogs.

7-5 is what I have consistenly been predicting. We'll probably end up here plus or minus a game. This will not end well for Miles and I do hope I am wrong.

If we finish 7-5 I will be disappointed. I think 9-3 would be a successful year but bottom line is that if our O line does not get any better we are screwed. If it does then this team can even go 10-2. There are more questions that are left unanswered going into the season than I feel comfortable with.

I see 8-5, 9-4. Counting the bowl game. If there is one. Could be 5 wins, could be 10 with some bad breaks or some good luck

Not if the two losses were to Florida and Alabama. For the next several years or until he's forced to resign from LSU, Miles' seasons will be measured by how he performs in these two games.

I think he can suffer another loss to Bama and UF, but not to Ole Miss. If Nutt wins for the 4th straight time, people are gonna be upset. I think people are resigned to the fact that right now, LSU is an underdog to UF and Bama. Ole Miss, Moo U, Auburn and Arky are probably more important. I don't think many of the fanbase expects to contend for the West, but stranger things have happened.

In perhaps the only way that I'm admittedly unrealistic to the program, I do expect us to compete for the West every year, though I'll admit that it was harder to do so after losing our DC and QB in the same offseason.
I think the only way that Miles really gets his credibility back is to do something that no one expects him to do next year. In a word, he has to shift the balance of power in the SEC, lest he always be compared to the two "better" teams in the division as grounds for his dismissal.
Basically anything short of 11-1, SEC Championship team and you'll either hear about how the team won despite him, or how we'll have to take the "wait-and-see" approach until the 2011 season. FWIW, I don't think there's any way that we do poorly enough for him to actually get fired next year.

I see no way we are a dog when we play UNC. FWIW

When did the NEW LSU "Fan Rules" go into effect? Cholly Mac went 2-17 against Bama.

A losing season, he will be fired. I don't think it will happen. Miles has enough skills and the team has enough talent (combine the two) to have a winning season every year. I don't see last years team improving enough to be a contender this year though. Lost a lot of talent from last year.

Different expectations now. Just the way it is. I think Miles could lose to Saban every year and keep his job, just not appease the fan base. He can't continue losing to Nutt though. Bama is the top dog, losing to them is not going to be a shock

And this is what I interpreted the idea of "calming the storm" to mean. If Miles' record against Saban falls to 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, the grumblings will only intensify. In short, Miles has to make his 7, 8, and 9 year achievements equal that of Saban or everyone who likes to live in the past will continue to point to Saban's success at the same checkpoint as evidence of his superiority.

This is true. There will be those grumblings, every coach hears them. Remember the drunk Bama fan who tried to throw a brick through his window during Sabans first year?

Some fans? Yep. As long as Saban is on top of the West, there will be problems with some of the fans. But winning 8-9 games a year will not get Miles fired. The further LSU gets from its NC days the more accepting the superiors will be of less than stellar success.

Coaches are judged on expectations. Miles expectations (based on part of what he has done) are substantially higher than any other coach in my lifetime. Had Saban continued at LSU (and reaped a 4M salary) his would as well.

Two things:
LSU wasn't paying Cholly Mac an outrageous salary.
Who said LSU fans were happy about it and had lesser expectations? My Uncle Fred moaned about it every year, "Mac is a good second banana."
