I personally don't see Hampton playing much this year

He might just stick with football depending on where his pro career looks to be heading
What are you basing this off of? You realize that if it wasn't for football, he would have probably been drafted very high in professional baseball right out of high school right?
I don't know exactly how much he contributes, but he is going to be difficult to keep off the diamond.

Is there a schedule yet on their preseason practice?

Heard a rumor that they are looking at Hill as the closer TIFWIW

From an email from Jamie Tutko last week....

Our players are beginning to make their way back to Baton Rouge and we have our first team meeting of the spring next Tuesday, January 14, after the football team takes care of business Monday night! The boys are really excited to get going here and we cannot wait to start another journey to Omaha.
Our first official day of practice will be January 24th and three weeks after that we will be opening up against the University of Indiana at The Box on February 14th.

Where did you hear that? Is it because they don't want to log a ton of innings on his arm this year?

Is Mainieri still our coach?

Last year I put together a scoring system to rank each teams experience relative to their time at LSU. It's very rudimentary. 1 point for each year at LSU. .5 points for each year at a JUCO. Then I average out the roster.
Our 2 highest scoring experience teams under Mainieri were 2009 and 2017. This year's roster is only slightly below the 2017 roster for third place under Mainieri.
The roster score and season finish doesn't have a ton of correlation overall, but I don't know that it's a coincidence that our two most experienced teams made it to the CWS finals.
Very interesting. When I get the time I'm going to log what the returning innings are from year to year. I can't remember a time other than possibly 11 to 12 or 16 to 17 that brought this amount of returners on the mound.

Hampton certainly has the talent but he is competing against players that do this year round. I just think the lack of reps and the sheer workload is asking a lot. Like I said it depends where is pro career is heading.

He increased their slash line by 7%/6%/17% (not percentage points, but relative to the previous year). OPS went up by 12%. Walk rate went up by 7%, K rate down by 3%. Extra Base Hit rate went up by 29%.
I know you are doing this for fun and it is really hard to control for, but any idea what a normal progression year-to-year would be? In other words, how much can reasonably be attributed to Smith's coaching vs. normal player progression? Would be really interesting to see, and I am definitely not smart enough to figure it out.

I don't know that. So, yeah, my numbers don't have context to them. If given enough time I could probably figure out the context for those specific years, but I don't know how to code, so it would be done pretty manually with the help of excel. So by the time I'd have an answer, we'd be moving onto worrying about how Smith does when he's had more than one year to work with a player.

Fair enough
I figured your answer would be somewhere between "no idea" and "GTFO"

There are people out there that have that info, for sure. Or could generate it quickly.
But they know how to scrape websites for data and build databases from which they can query what they want.
And what's funny is that some of those people don't do that for any reason other than to play fantasy baseball.

He is a newcomer from Juco. Best way to describe him is Chris Reid, but probably a little better. Doesn't seem to do anything off the charts great, but does everything well. He was a hitting machine throughout the fall.

He is an infielder from a California JUCO. He was originally committed/signed with Cal St Northridge. They fired their coach and he got a release to sign with LSU. He was also drafted by the Twins (before even committing to LSU) but passed up that opportunity to come to Baton Rouge.
He's played all over the infield in JUCO and Summer Leagues. But he was drafted as a catcher.
