I did some research on Eddie Smith's impact on players his first year with a team. This is small sample size and probably incomplete. But I looked at players who were at the school before he got there and compared that to what they did his first year there. This includes players from Santa Clara, Tulane, and Notre Dame.

He increased their slash line by 7%/6%/17% (not percentage points, but relative to the previous year). OPS went up by 12%. Walk rate went up by 7%, K rate down by 3%. Extra Base Hit rate went up by 29%.

So, he's shown to have a positive impact on returning players in his first year at a program. When you combine that with guys typically making their biggest jump from Freshman to Sophomore year, we could see a big offensive jump this year.

I think Willis, in particular, is primed for a breakout season.

That's good stuff. We've only seen a small sample size during the fall but that game against Nichols I saw more opposite field hits from players than I did during an entire month in 2019.

I think we see the return of Freshman-year Walker. No way he’s not in the weekend rotation if that’s the case.

Yep. Players hitting line drives to the opposite field jumped off the screen in that game. It's the fall, and it's Nichols, but hitting to the opposite field is still great to see from an LSU team.

Catcher: Milazzo is by far the best defender and I could see him playing a lot just because of that. If Garza hits like he did at the end of the season, he has to play. They said Travinski would strike out too often but I didn't see that in the fall. My guess is he going to hit better than Garza.
Infield: Hughes experience is a big a factor as his glove and I think he will hit better than people think. It will be interesting to see what kind of bat Arnold will bring. He will have to be significantly better than Hughes at the plate to replace him but that is totally possible. Beloso has 1st locked up, especially since you have Garza and Travinski as DH. Mathis has 3rd locked down. Cade was off and on at 2nd. He will come around but when is the big question.
Outfield: They all can play.
Pitcher: Top guns, depth, experience. It doesn't get any better. I hope we make the most of it because next year is not looking as promising. The pitcher I am most excited about is storz. This guy looks like he was made in a factory and I could tell by his body language and interactions with his teammates he is itching to go.

Freshman year Walker is 6th most talented starting pitcher on this roster, if everyone is healthy and performing near their potential.

Henry is the best pitcher. Hands down. He's a cut above.

Marceaux could be a Friday night guy, that is pitching in Saturday (or Sunday).

Hill was our best pitcher early last season. Even if he returns to that form, he will have to claw for a spot in the weekend rotation.

Labas in the fall showed he is as good as we thought.

With Storz, we will have to wait and see. We haven't seen it fully yet, but it's there.

And this isn't even a knock on Walker at all. Our pitching staff COULD be that good.

Based on the rest of the post, I think you mean Milazzo here. And I feel like he will play a lot as the 2nd Catcher when Garza needs a break or is DHing. Travinski is also a DH candidate.

I think when we play teams like UMass-Lowell and Eastern Kentucky on the weekends, you'll see the line ups turnover after like 2 plate appearances.

He's probably talking about Milazzo

We are going to have to bring in some studs next year to replace what we could potentially lose.

Then there is Hampton. He will be behind, but he could come in and take an OF position. He may be hard to keep off the field once he gets going.

I believe Hampton will be the starting center fielder by the time LSU goes to the SEC tournament. He is good enough to make up for being behind the others in reps.

Doughty's glove is an issue here, so him playing SS may be a last resort.

I wonder if CPM thinks Doughty’s future is at shortstop and just sticks him there day one and lives with the lumps on defense in the hopes he will turn into one of the greats. He did this with Bregman who was not the best defensive shortstop as a freshman but turned himself into a great one with reps. I think he will go with Hughes to start the season until one or two of the guys in the SS/2B battle proves they have to be in the lineup somewhere.

Doughty hasn't played SS in the fall. Being that Arnold was out most of it, and Doughty was almost strictly at third and second, I'm going to say the answer is no. Doughty fielded really poorly in summer ball at SS. Mainieri isn't going to allow that from the SS position.

I don't know what Bregman you are thinking of as bad, but I'm going to guess that Bregs at his worst, at LSU, is miles ahead of Doughty on defense right now.

This is a year that could land him on the hot seat, if LSU doesn't perform up to LSU standards. And if he finds his seat warm after this year, then the next season could be the end of his of his career. They may try to avoid firing him, but he will be nudged into retirement.

That being said, I don't think this will even be a topic of conversation at the end of this season.

Cade Doughty best chance of playing this year is at 2nd.
I personally don't see Hampton playing much this year. We have outfielders just as fast with maybe as much power. Hitting a SEC curveball is not an easy task without a lot of reps and coaching. He might not ever contribute. He is taking on a lot. He might just stick with football depending on where his pro career looks to be heading

Last year I put together a scoring system to rank each teams experience relative to their time at LSU. It's very rudimentary. 1 point for each year at LSU. .5 points for each year at a JUCO. Then I average out the roster.

Our 2 highest scoring experience teams under Mainieri were 2009 and 2017. This year's roster is only slightly below the 2017 roster for third place under Mainieri.

The roster score and season finish doesn't have a ton of correlation overall, but I don't know that it's a coincidence that our two most experienced teams made it to the CWS finals.
