After 3 games, one of our first round defensive ends has only 2 solo tackles. Not going to mention his name because idiots on this board hammered me about saying something about his performance or lack of, the first 2 games. Dandy Dons has a great chart showing a comparison of stats from last years team to this years. With much easier opponents, this years team has less sacks.

Did the article also mention that the d-line held Idaho to 30 yds rushing and had a member of the line with a pick 6? The defense had 4 total interceptions because the qb was going to get rid of the ball before the rush got to him regardless of his receivers being covered. So instead of all out blitzing, sometimes our entire d-line didn't even rush. This is how one of our lineman dropped off of the line of scrimmage and picked off a slant pass and ran it back for a td.

It's also why Idaho was poor on 3rd down conversions, because even on 3rd and long, the ball was out quickly and thrown short of the first down marker, just hoping the receiver can pick up extra yards after the catch.

What I didn't understand is that we didn't press all of their receivers if they were doing the quick passes. We covered the slot with a safety playing 10 yards off of the receiver. It was easy pitch and catch for them when we defended like that.

With 4 ints, 2 of which returned for touchdowns.

But, getting the ball out quickly is something other teams will try to negate our pass rushers. Kudos to Idaho for doing something effective on offense. The fact that 11% of their pass attempts were intercepted, and around 7% if their "completed" passes were returned for touchdowns by the other team is the price they paid for getting the ball out quickly.

Don't allow the productivity numbers - (Idaho QB was 23-36, for 174 yards respectable, if not for 4 INTS and no TDS, combined with our failure to sack him) - confuse the issue - we limited them to less than 5 yards per pass attempt, and 7.6 yards per completion, while at the same time shutting down their running game (and snagging 4 INTs including 2 pick sixes) - if the price for that is 0 sacks - we'll take it.

Ditto for the time of possession. It is an important stat, but not overriding the otherwise dominant performance shown by LSU.

Just saw this in some article (I think on CFN). True story?

AND???

I'd rather the 2 pick 6's over a couple sacks..

Plus as fast as that QB was getting rid of the ball it was hard to get to him fast enough...
It would have taken Chuck Norris speed to get to him in enough time...

This, plus there was a pick six when he was under pressure.

I'll have to goive it to the Idaho QB, he was really good at getting rid of the ball under the gun.

Having said that, the lack of sacks thus far does have me concerned. The last time I can remember our D-line being so bad about getting to the QB was 09 which was a mediocre year by LSU standards.

I would imagine Chavis picked up on the quick throws rather quickly and that's the way he set his defenses (note the interceptions). As long as you cause 3 and outs, it doesn't matter how many passes their QB completes. They couldn't run, or throw long passes effectively so "sacks" were not that important for this game IMO.
