If you go back and watch the video and focus solely on the pitcher, you can see that he knew what had happened the moment Tommy made contact. You can damned near see his soul leave his body as he spun around

In the full NCAA post game presser Tommy said they are friends he’s played with and against him his whole life that’s why he went to him after to make sure he was alright
