Nobody wants this, not the coaches, not the players. It's just some loser in the SEC front office that has to justify his job and now he's patting himself on the back because he thinks players were being killed or worse from all the collisions at first base.
you are aware that this is an NCAA rule and not just the SEC this year, correct?
you are also aware that the rules committee that votes on these changes is made up of college baseball coaches?

It’s a great rule. It never fails on a bunt and close play at first with collisions it’s up to umpire discretion on if the batter is in the baseline, could the fielder make an attempt, all that. This makes it easier. And as a former little league first baseman getting kicked in the ankle sucks.

It has nothing to do with whether you turn one way or another after the bag, it’s whether you make an attempt to advance to second. There are people who think you can’t run through first and after stopping, turn your left side first as you walk back to the base, you are only a runner if you have done something to demonstrate an intent to advance.

Correct.
but it's really up to the umpire as to whether your move is a move toward advancing to 2nd or not.

Correct, the “attempt” is a judgment call.
